Is Ralph Naranjo a CDSOA member

Post by Capt Hook »

I don't have my CDSOA member directory with me at the office.

I opened an email from Practical Sailor this morning and saw a picture that looked like aTyphoon on a trailer.

I clicked on the article and the caption under the pic said it is a Typhoon and belongs to Ralph Naranjo.

Nice looking boat.

Now that I am home and have access to my directory I see that Ralph Naranjo is NOT a CDSOA member. He is the Technical Editor of Practical Sailor and owns a Typhoon. Maybe some recruitment is in order.

Captain Hook:

If I recall correctly Ralph Naranjo was the director of sailing operations at the United States Naval Academy for many years.

He is a prolific writer. Several years ago he wrote an article in Good Old Boat (I think) in which he discussed the experience of having some of his mast shroud chain plates on his Cape Dory Typhoon separate from the hull. Fortunately, given his sailing skills, he was able to get everything under control without further damage.

He would definitely be a valuable addition to our forum.
Fair winds,

Roberto

Roberto is correct. Ralph was in charge of the USNA designing and building its new line of one-design racers, the Navy 44. Ralph is a friend of Darrell Nicholson, editor of Practical Sailor. Before he worked at PS, Darrell served as editor of Offshore Magazine, where I served as senior editor. Ralph also wrote for our magazine ... and I met him once (not to name-drop). He's extremely knowledgeable. Perhaps I should invite him to join us--although be is unlikely to remember me at all.

Maybe invite him to come speak at the next national meeting.

Good idea. Darrell, whom I do know very well, would also make a great speaker.
