replacing mainsheet traveller on CD25D

Post by gmills »

I'd like to upgrade the mainsheet traveller on my CD25D to something much easier to re-position under sail. Lewmar and Schaefer have replacement kits for boats under 30', and there are no doubt other products on the market. I'd like to be sure that the new track can be mounted at the same location as the current track, at the aft end of the cockpit. The Lewmar kit seems preferable, but would require that the track be shortened from 4'11" to about 4' in length, to fit within the dimensions of the mounting board. Do you have any experience and/or suggestions on this?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Greg.... I second Tim's recommendation. A couple of years ago Tim recommended Garhauer to me for the traveler on my 25D. They were great to work with and the traveler workout well. Here's a link to the thread at that time that might be interesting.....http://www.capedory.org/board/viewtopic ... 4&start=15
All the best

Tim and others:

Thanks for the Garhauer suggestion. I just got off the phone with Guido, who indicated that their MT-3 traveller is what he'd recommend. I'll send him some measurements and photos of the current traveller, and then work out the details, including track length, curvature, and location of drill holes.

Any other thoughts are welcome.

Hey Greg,

I am in the middle of that project, well maybe not exactly the middle. It looks unanimous here for Garhauer.

Just waiting for the weather to warm up so I can fill the holes with epoxy and redrill them to attach the new traveler. Once I removed the old one and was ready to install the new using the same holes, it appeared there was balsa core exposed. This required drilling out the holes one size larger, gouging out the core, then refill with epoxy and drill the proper size holes to prevent water intrusion. It will be bedded with butyl tape as well. It would be good to be aware of this as you replace yours. I found it necessary to get a 3/8" thick, I think it was, piece of teak for the new track to sit on. It was required as the car is significantly wider and rubbed on the piece of teak at the aft end of the cockpit. Raising it up a little prevented the problem. I chose not to taper the new teak riser.

I believe my track was 42 or 44 inches, on the road so relying on memory or could be more precise. The track was bent down 1" on each end. It matched the curve of the deck nicely. I am looking forward to easier traveler adjustment next summer.

Assuming Garhauer has already made a few travelers for a Cape Dory 25D, is it reasonable to assume that the existing travelers on all the CD 25Ds are the same including the metal bracket, hole positions, etc. :?: There are a few threads from several years ago where other CD 25D caretakers installed travelers made by Garhauer.

If so, I would assume you could tell Guido you have a CD 25D and he already should have the correct measurements, hole positions, etc. I would think this would be a lot more accurate than sending in "new" measurements.

For example, when I purchased my Triad Trailer I did not have to take any measurements. They had built several (many) and knew exactly what the measurements were for S/V Bali Ha'i.

I am giving some thought to installin a new traveler system as well. I look forward to further posts from Garhauer customers.
