I'm looking at a CD22 next weekend (1981) and would appreciate any tips on certain things I should look for or be aware of. Also, any thoughts on the value of an '81 in whatever shape. I'm kinda' new to sailing but have owned boats 20+ years. Thanks, HMS

I hope this helps,My wife and I just purchased a Cape Dory 22 last week and it was in 4 condition (1 to 10 10 being the best)it needs all new stays all around. We are doing a total refit from keel to masthead and bow to stern. We had quotes which includes new sails and new electronics and all we are looking between 2500 to 4000 to refit.I work at a boat yard and spoke to a friend who is a yacht broker and looked at the boat with me and he felt that the price was a good one which was $3800.So evenif the refit is on the high end of the qutoes you are looking at a total of 7800 when finished.I have seem 22's selling as high as 11,500.One of the biggest things I would say to look close at is the chain plates the mast compression area that has been my experience also this is not my first sailboat. One big advantage for us was the outboard engine is a 1999 8 hp Yamaha.
Again I hope I helped and if you need any more help and if I can be of some help feel free to e-mail me direct. E-Mail JGC2@PRODIGY.NET.

Mast Step Reinforcement
Here's the verbage from the Cape Dory Users Manual regarding the mast step reinforcement in several models including the CD22.
"...3.24 MAST STEP REINFORCEMENT
Since the masts of the Typhoon, 22, 25, 27, 28 and 30 Cape Dory Boats are stepped on deck, a reinforcement system is fitted to distribute the load safely to the hull. The Typhoon Weekender utilizes a molded-in beam to support the mast step. Cape Dory 22's, 25's, 27's, 28's and 30's use structural metal members located between the deck and the headliner to distribute rigging loads to the forward and aft bulkheads. These supports transfer the load to the cabin sole, directly beneath the bulkhead posts. Please refer to section on tuning to avoid overstressing the mast step structure. Overtightening the tumbuckles is not necessary and can be dangerous...."
Hope this helps.
