Windlass Size for CD33-36

Post by Paul D. »

In the process of considering adding a windlass to Femme du Nord, I would love the board's collective thoughts on how much power you think is needed for a windlass for a boat like the Cape Dory 33 (The Ingrid Bergman of sailboats, BTW). I am narrowing the choice to a horizontal model for mounting within the anchor locker. Thanks in advance.

Hahaha, best post ever. Both are exquisite beauties and excellent of you to make the comparison. I am eager to hear the response as I am planning the same.

You did not say Paul, but it sounds like you're desire to go electric?

I am sure it will be as electric as Ingrid's smile.

Nah. I disagree. Clearly if she has a windlass it would have been manual all the way. Just saying.

I think manual windlass is much more Katherine Hepburn's style as in African Queen. Nothing at all against Katherine, but I am thinking of going electric with a manual backup (that actually works in practice, as opposed to only in theory).

I like my Lewmar Profish 1000 .Its so easy to install and fit perfectly at the end of the bowsprit .but I had to raise the boom pedestal 2". Evan the hole for the chain was close , only about 1" off. Here is a photo with the boom out of the way. My crewmember takes the helm while I work the windlass.

I might take a side bet on Maureen O'Hara.

And just for the record, I have a bronze ABI windlass I am about to rebuild and sell. Same as I use on the FR. 5/16" HT.

John: I'd be very interested in buying your ABI windlass!

I'd love to see it when you're done!

Dalton. No worries. I’ll make a note to contact you when it’s ready and if you are interested you can have first right of refusal. Probably get to it later in the spring.
