Saturday I went down to check on Orion which is safely stored on the hard for the winter. Whenever I stop by I check on a few friends boats to ensure they are safe and sound. I snapped a couple photos while I was there. This is the most ice I've seen since I've kept my boat in Noank at Spicer's. Normally it is pretty much ice free or just a bit of skim ice on the surface. The Artic weather we've been experiencing has allowed the ice to build up quite a bit this season. The yard crew will be out in their work boat Monday on their "ice breaker" duty.

Yeah, lots of ice over here in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia (about 40 miles southwest of Halifax). Very little wet storage here, but our town wharf rents out dry storage space on the wharf each winter. They always put a large (maybe 40 feet) deep-fin-keel sloop on a cradle right on the seaward end of the pier. So we had wind gusts of 60 knots last week and the cradle blew over. Trashed the mast and a little Tanzer-type sloop next door. Can't yet tell if the big sloop's hull was cracked. Every boat owner's nightmare.

Nearby boats on jack stands look fine. The issues with this boat, besides the position on the wharf which gave it no wind protection, might also be the very long fin keel which provided extra windage as well as the narrowness of the custom cradle.

Could the moral of this story be to anchor your cradle? Those screw-in anchors they use for house trailers in Florida might help.

I'll send a photo later. I feel for the boat owner.

I picked the right year, not to winter wet.

Raven is safely snuggled in about 30 yards in front of the house. I get to wake up every morning and watch the sun rise over her. I have not gotten to much work done on her due to a late haul out and the extreme cold but I will be busy in the spring. It is great to be able to check on her every day, Steve.

There is a typhoon still on its mooring in Rockport Maine harbor with the jib still hanked on to the forestay and stowed in its sail bag. Iced in solid.

I hope the owner is okay. People don't do that unless something is wrong.

Agreed. There was a boat abandoned on a mooring in Newport all summer and it just got towed off this morning. Its been a great mystery as to what state the owner was in.

We are iced in as well and even the dock bubbler is struggling to keep up. It looks like we'll finally have a reprieve in temps over the next several days and hope to be back out sailing again next week! I raced my Laser on New Year's Day and came back with both the boat and myself covered in ice. The cam cleats all froze making the final beat a challenge but the wind was perfect (15-18ish) and it was a great day on the water.

I did a CDSOA database search for current or former members with a Rockport hailing port or a Rockport marina town and found six results, but none with Typhoons. There are over 1500 Cape Dorys in the database which can be searched, should we find a Cape Dory in one form of distress or another. The database is not a great tool for this sort of thing, but it might just pay off, and is just a little bit of insurance for our members that someone may be looking out for them that they don't even know about.

The weather has been terrible in NC too. Nothing compared to what those north of us have been experiencing. While not unprecedented for eastern NC, it is unusual. We had about 5 days below freezing with snow on the ground all week. I checked on the boat (I had to wait a few days as both Camp Lejeune and Cherry Point closed do to slick icy roads). Hancock Creek where we keep our boat was frozen all the way accross. About 1/2"-1" thick. Two years ago today the Far Reach and I were in the BVI.

I'm thinking I need to avoid this kind of weather next year!
