CD27 - Winterizing, what did I miss?

Post by csoule13 »

Saddest day of the year - getting the boat ready for a mid Atlantic winter. Changed the oil on the YSM8, flushed it with 5 gallons fresh water and then enough pink stuff until it was spitting pink out the exhaust(about 3 gallons). Sails are home. Batteries are home. Holding tank is pumped out, and the potable water tank is pumped clean(and going to get torn out of the boat during the winter). Bilge is bone dry.

Gabrielle gets hauled this week, and her winter cover gets installed upon arrival.

Looking at the BoatUS checklist, I've got the big stuff, and will get most of the other things like the cushions and electronics next weekend.

Winterizing
Seems like you are in good shape.
Here are some other things that should be done in preparation of a winter haulout:
Change the oil & filter (but might be hard to pump out if not warm).
Top up diesel tank and add stabilizer & biocide to kill bacteria.
Close all seacocks except those which drain the cockpit.
Put antifreeze in head and pump through system.
Make sure your fresh water lines are pumped out or filled with antifreeze.

I thought the "pink stuff" was for water systems?

There is "pink stuff" formulated for winterizing potable water systems only, engine cooling systems only, and both. Examples below.

Got to be a reason the 2000 costs more. Must be to provide corrosion protection, protects all metals. Will protect to -200° undiluted.

You can spray fogging oil into the air intake as you rotate the engine with the hand crank. This is done after you have removed the air filter so the oil is sprayed directly into the engine. It is necessary to lift the compression lever when you do so, or the engine may accidentally come to life. The instructions recommend stopping at top dead center as well as taping the air intake and the exhaust shut.

It is a good time to remove and inspect the impeller, lightly coat with grease and reinstall or replace as needed.

I pull the impeller and let it sit outside the water pump housing so the fins don't take a set. I also lay around some fabric softener sheets to make her less appealing to the critters.

make sure to drink all of the beer in the icebox, otherwise it could explode in a deep freeze.

Pink stuff in the (otherwise empty) water tank and pumped through to the sinks.

Pimk stuff in the head and flushed through, then more pink stuff for the bowl.

Seacocks open so they drain.

Pink stuff in the bilge to keep whatever water gets in from freez.

I leave some bottled water on the boat, for spring drinking and cleaning while on the hard.

Most everything is off the boat... triage in the basement takes most of the off season... sorting into (i) for sure back on the boat, (ii) needs repair/maintenance before going to (i), and (ii) didn't use it last year, either, but eventually goes to category (i).
