Winches for a Typhoon WE

OK - The first season with the boat was abbreviated but had good fun and learned a lot. For starters I will not be installing a battery or any power. It's a daysailer and stand-alone LED systems like I have on my inflatable will be fine. That was one of the many good pieces of advice I received from this forum. Thanks mates.
I re-seated the main cleat, glassed over the old marine head holes and replace the seacocks, valves and hoses to the cockpit scuppers. New morning pennant and safety gear. Did what I needed to make her seaworthy and safe.
Doing more this winter modifying the sails to Ty specs, stays, Flurex, teak work, etc.

Here's my question:
I inherited two blocks on the original winch stands - I want to remove them and put new winches there. Looking for a Classic Bronze look like original equipment. I know to size the winch based on the stand size from Spartan. I am looking at Harkin and Lewmar. I have also seen manufactures from New Zealand and Australia. Any recommendations out there?

I imagine one of these Lewmar's would be right. Been awhile since we've had our 1976 Typhoon. She had one speed winches that I believe were #8's.

If I was looking for winches that would work on a Typhoon I would be doing it at a consignment shop. There are always some smaller bronze single speed non self tailing winches available. I don't know what yoyu might have in Maine but there is a large shop in Newport that might make for a nice day trip for you. Everyone is looking for self tailers these days and there are some real bargains in traditional winches to be had. Cleating is just part of the sailing experience as far as I am concerned, Steve.

I think I found a good winch for the Ty.

This Lewmar No. 6 Ocean Series Standard Winch in bronze looks good. Price is decent.

Just unsure about the size (it will fit on the bronze bracket base) ... any experience with sizing out there?

Unless you really just want winches, you might consider using a 2:1 purchase on your jib sheets. It will be a much less expensive option and is actually easier to use. That's how we run most similar sized race boats (J22, J70, etc.). Most of us on those boats never touch the winches the entire time we own the boat and with a well-thought out purchase system you'll never need the winch anyway. It might be worth a try before replacing the existing winches (which you can always service if you want them ready for use if needed).
