Outboard Motor Questions for Cape Dory 22s

Went and looked at a nice CD22 today. Although there is an aft hatch cover over what in some other Cape Dories is an outboard motor well, there was no opening in the hull below, so the area was just being used for storage. Not sure if a previous owner covered the slot in the hull, or if they came from the factory closed and the delivering dealer or owner had to open up the slot if they wanted a well-mounted O/B (see for ex the attached pic of a hull-mounted O/B on a Typhoon Senior). This particular CD22 had a stern-mounted O/B on an O/B bracket.

Also, has anyone run O/B motor controls to the cockpit since the outboard is back there a ways?

What HP O/B are you using? Is 6HP enough to make headway against a tidal current in a narrow channel like under a bridge going head-to-wind, or is an 8-9 HP O/B better?

Finally, is the stern is stout enough with the right O/B bracket and backing plate to handle a modern 100-lb 9.9 HP 4-stroke. I sail in the Northeast US. Thanks !

I have a 6hp Mercury that came with my CD25 and it has plenty of power. Your boat weighs 800 lbs. less so you should be fine. I think if you put a bigger/heavier motor you will find it causes the boat to squat at the stern. It will be more so with the motor hung on the transom then in the lazarette. I cannot address the issue of if you can open the area up for the motor.

6hp-4 stroke works for me(4 thousand lbs)
There are times head to wind and current I wish I had more ponies but the 6hp worked fine.100 lbs is a lot of weight back there but I am sure the transom will support it.
Tohatsu has a 6h.p. model that has a different prop for more thrust which I do not have. Might look in to that.

Ty Seniors were built with a motor well. CD 22’s were not.

You gave two mounting options...either a Spartan bracket mounted on the poop deck or stern mounted bracket. If you go the latter there us a board glassed into the aft storage area about 10-12 inches wide, it should fit the widthe required for a modern 4 stroke bracket. What I don't like us how that weight hangs down off the stern away from the transom vs a traditional straight vertical transom where the sheer is down. Not sure if a heavier motor will induce more stress.

I have a 5hp Tohatsu with the Spartan bracket and I can easily get it to 5+ kts. See pix

Jim, those are backup lights.

Yes I thought the two lights were a bit strange. Only reason I can think of is when one places a horseshoe throwable or a life sling between the two it doesn't obstruct the view of the stern light from abeam

I use a Tohatsu 5hp propane engine on my CD26 which is north of #6000 loaded with gear and people. It would push the boat 5.5knots in flat water. We made many trips in and out of the Merrimack River bucking the tide to and from our mooring in Newburyport. That engine or the 6hp gasoline model will move a CD22 nicely.

Just picked up a lightly used Tohatsu 6hp Sail Pro with the 25 inch long shaft and I quite like it. Plenty of power for my CD 22, it seems.

Good choice. The 25” Sailpro model is the one that I have as well. It has a larger prop and a rectifier that charges a battery.
