Cape Dory 10 Resto Pix

Post by wsonntag »

Just a few pictures to while away an hour or so by the Christmas tree. The row about the harbor shot is Georgetown on the Sassafras River on a summer day.

Did spring re-varnish and general buff and puff this weekend on my CD10. Here are a few photos. Boat has been in family 48 years - yikes!

Thanks once again. I have the sail rig already for this year too. My brother and I used to sail this little boat as teenagers. We'd launch her from my parents sailboat at anchor and hot-rod around the anchorage in the late afternoon breeze checking out anchored boats for comely crew, showing off our technique and daring-do by zooming up within a few feet of unsuspecting yachts, passing astern. On at least a few occasions our efforts were rewarded with a second pass and a beer hand-off. Golden memories of delightful, simple days, the harbor full of pretty sailboats a lively sailing dinghy plying among them in the afternoon sunshine. Stop, back to work!

I've restored a CD 10 in the last few years (my second copy). I wonder if you've painted the bottom and if so, how you marked the waterline. I'm aware of the traditional methods, but interested in your specifics.

No science, we used the scum line on hull after a season of use.

I have painted a few dinghies and have always thought the traditional methods of establishing the waterline were rather tedious. I simply float the thing in a very still pond and use blocks of blue foam. You want a fairly good sized piece of foam so that it is stable when it floats. Lay a sharp pencil on top of the block and then trace the bottom of the waterline around the hull. Add another block, equal to the thickness of the boot stripe you wish to paint and trace the top of the line around. Pull the boat out, turn it over to let it dry off and tape off the pencil lines. Paint the boot stripe and you are all set. There is no way to get it wrong and it is much easier than any other method I have ever read about, Steve.

Reply also to Steve: This particular CD10 is hanging in the garage and there's no easy way to float it (no trailer, no hitch, etc.). I'm comtemplating building a small temporary wading pool under it (blue tarp and scrap lumber), but for some reason my wife thinks this may be a bad idea (smile). Also of note is that this model was built with a liner and I have no idea how that compares with my earlier CD10 that was identical to the hull pictured in this thread. Not a big deal, but if and when this boat goes into the water, it's going to stay in the water for a while.
