Leaking centek muffler

Post by csoule13 »

Finally got all of the new exhaust pieces hooked up. During a test run, noticed a very slight trickle of water along the side of the muffler. Hoses were dry, top of the muffler is dry. No idea if this is how the muffler used to behave, as I didn't really have a need to stare intently at the thing.

Taking the boat out for a short shakedown tomorrow, and will check again. Is this a nuisance that can be monitored or is this a more serious item? The quantity of water blasting out the exhaust was good, and a huge improvement from before I replaced everything from the manifold to the muffler.

I would look again at all the connections and the winterizing drain plug. That Centec is of a fiberglass-fire-proof epoxy construction, I believe,
and is strong. Possibly there's a crack, but I would look elsewhere first. Maybe dry the area, start up and watch carefully. It's worth
fixing so you don't have to worry about it whenever you're motoring. - Jean

I had a slight weeping at a seam on my muffler, which is also a Centec Vernalift. I asked the boatyard mechanic for his advice. He said he could order me a new replacement but if it was his boat he'd try J-B Weld epoxy putty first, which is what I did. It's been fine all season.
I may get another 33 years out of it.

Jim, that is exactly what I've got. A slight weep at the seem near the top. I'd bet a bottle of rum it's been like that for years. Explains quite a bit about the area around it, too. JB Weld it is!

FYI, a huge thanks to everyone on the board. This is my first season as a full owner, and everyone's patience and knowledge has been greatly appreciated.
