CD27 hand rails

Post by csoule13 »

After a surprisingly easy time scraping layers of cetol off the hand rails(heat gun, sharp scraper, 10-15 minutes of your time), I can see there are a few bungs here. Obviously these are screwed to the cabin top. I can't find a corresponding bolt below deck, so safe to assume these aren't through-bolted? Or is there are surprise lurking for me?

After thrashing on another project for awhile, it was nice for something to just sort of work. Looks like a little light sanding, and these will look great again.

If the exterior handrails on the 27 are the same as the 25D, then you remove the interior handrail to access the nuts for the exterior rail. The interior rail had two screws at each exterior nut location securing them to the ceiling.

Wondering why we are all not out sailing now?

Oddly enough, my '78 27 has no interior handrails. But thanks for the tip!

I don't think that they are through bolted.

I cannot believe that they would just be screwed in place. If you remove your overhead light you might be able to look between the deck and the headliner and see what is below the handrail.

On my 27, they are through-bolted. From the cabin looking up, the headliner has little round plastic covers hiding the nuts.

Speaking of which, if anyone has been able to source new handrails that fit the hole pattern for the 27, I would be interested. I bought some online last year but they did not fit.
