Sailing with Andy - CD 30?

Post by Steve Darwin »

I've been looking at the interesting videos and essays posted by Andy Stephens:
http://sailingwithandy.com/2017/05/16/t ... f-sailing/
http://sailingwithandy.com/videos/
He describes his boat Cascadia as a Cape Dory 30 with a cutter rig, but the videos show that it is a sloop. Did he alter the rig? If so, anyone know why?
Also, the below-decks tour shows a large head where a v-berth normally would be, and a deck-stepped mast supported by a compression post. I thought the 25D was the only model built that way. All the CD30's I've seen described on line (boats for sale, e.g.) have a v-berth, as indicated on the CD30 plans posted on this web site. Was Cascadia's arrangement a custom build do you think? More than one "Cape Dory 30"?
Just wondering.

I think if you look in the CD Info section the forward head where there's normally a V berth was an optional arrangement.

I only see it in the 1986 Product Brochure.

One of the earlier brochures showed five opening ports per side. Don't know if that was right.

Steve
As Capt Hook pointed out it was lay out B offered in the last run of the 30.
Maybe previous owner took the club boom off and wanted a big head sail??
If I was going offshore on a 30 I think I would prefer the cutter rig.
Looks like Andy's arrangement works for him.
I believe he has a furling main, nice set-up for single handing

The CD 28 has a deck stepped mast.

I don't know about other models.

My CD 31 has a keel stepped mast.

Steve,
The CD30 "B" version had the large head forward in lieu of a V berth. It also had a Nav Station w/ chart table and a quarter berth.

It works for us!
