Why I Want to Relocate

Post by Sea Hunt Video »

So, if anyone wants a "visual" of why I want to relocate from South Florida to almost anywhere else, this photo should explain it.

Gert is now a Cat. 1 hurricane (75 mph), admittedly (and fortunately) not projected to hit any land mass. The orange disturbance will probably become a tropical depression in 2-3 days; likely then a hurricane given the record breaking warm water temps. in the Caribbean, especially along "hurricane alley" towards my residence. :(  The yellow disturbance is too far out to make reasonable course projections. However, that is about where what became Hurricane Andrew started in early August 1992. Andrew made landfall as a Cat. 5 hurricane on 24 August 1992 at 0405 hours with winds sustained well above 160 mph. The wind meter blew off the NHC/NOAA tower at 160 mph.

Thanks Neil. I may take you up on that.

I have fond memories of spending a few hours with you and Joe M. aboard S/V Liquidity several years ago, as well as a great dinner at a local watering hole.

If I survive this "H" season we will see if my motivation to get out of "H" alley is strong.

Enjoy the remainder of your sailing season. As a former resident of Mass., I know this time of the year is idyllic in New England.

Ahoy Roberto,
You'll be most welcome back in New England.
At the rate things seem to be warming up (not being political!), you might feel at home here again, even in winter.

Best,

Roberto,

You're not up to date.

There are THREE systems out there besides Gert.

My Friend Captain Cook:

No one, and I repeat no one, watches NOAA/NHC more diligently than I do. :D :D I check their website at least 4 times/day during "H" season.

If you look at my most recent post from yesterday, Tuesday, 15 August 2017 you will note that I identify all FOUR systems. It was the 2000 hours, 15 August NOAA/NHC report. I wrote "We are now up to four (4) systems Three (3) of them are projected towards South Florida, the Florida Straits, the Caribbean, etc."[/u

Since 24 August 1992, I have become addicted to, and with good cause fearful of, watching the formation, course and strength of hurricanes. It is one of the reasons I want out of South Florida. In addition to it making caring for my S/V Bali Ha'i it very difficult, it also makes me lose sleep from June-November.

Captain Hook, lets hope their are no landfalls of hurricanes this year. I will enjoy a toast (Guinness of course) with you in November. :D

Roberto,

I am a Katrina survivor.

Although I had evacuated, could not get back to my house for a week. My son's house flooded and my daughter's house had the walls blown open.

Parts of our fair city got almost 10" of rain on Aug. 5 (Sat. before last) and that was not even a tropical storm.

But I'm not leaving.

Cpt Hook some folks don't transplant well! As is the case with me! That's why I'm back in Oklahoma (home) tornados or not!

Our area was impacted by 3 major named storms in '04 over 6 weeks. It's no fun.

Roberto,
Are you considering relocating to Texas?
Maybe around Corpus Christi?
You'd have to learn to drink Lone Star instead of Guinness.

My thoughts are with the citizens of the Gulf Coast of Texas and especially those who are caretakers of Cape Dory sailboats. It looks like Harvey will be a Cat. 3 or stronger when it makes landfall late tomorrow or early Saturday. I know what they will experience. It is not something I want to go through again.

Montana and North Dakota are looking good - cold but no hurricanes.
