CD Brown...was it the original

Did all CDs originally come with the dark chocolate brown coloured dodgers and lee cloths that Dayspring has ? It has finally gotten the better of us, and we are fitting new ones in a cream shade.

In a Sailrite Catalog a year or two back, there was a picture of a CD with either Linen or Toast (Sunbrella colors) canvas all over the boat. It really looked good to my eye.....and surely would be considerable cooler.

Talk to Sunbrella dealers, and ask for Cape Dory Brown. You will get the deep chocolate brown that you describe. I suspect that it was the standard color, since the non-skid contrasting color is a light brown/tan color. I have seen CD's that had changed their non-skid color, but I believe the tan non-skid was the only color that CD produced.

Larry:

I think the older CDs had the non skid in light blue. Sostenuto is that color (Thuugh I'm not sure it's the origional paint).

My '77 CD27#51 has no painted on nonskid...only the raised pattern in white jelcoat. I like it. I have no idea what color the canvas was. Everything is Blue now. If it ever wears out at the same time I'll get tan.

Re: Light blue original on older vintage CDs

Post by Catherine Monaghan »

Yes, the original non-skid on the older CD's was a light blue color. They also had a red bootstripe and blue bottom paint. The newer boats have light tan non-skid, dark brown bootstripe and/or covestripe and dark brown bottom paint.

I don't believe the CD's came with a dodger as standard equipment. It was either offered as an option from CDY or added by the owner.

There were 16 CDs at the rendezvous in New England last July, many of which did not have dodgers and never had them. Those that had dodgers were made by different manufacturers and they were all different colors as well, including dark brown, blue and red. So choose whatever pleases your eye. (You may want to make the new dodger the same color as the sun cover on your roller-furled headsail and/or sail covers.)

Well, that's interesting..blue non skid. I have seen a few of this color all right, but figured someone had changed the color themselves. Well, I learned something here..don't assume..etc.etc..heh

Thanks.

Timely discussion, as I'm just about to order new canvas for Machts Nichts CD 30 MK II. I do think brown was original color, and I have been debatinf wether to stick with it or change. That Toast is a nice color and does lighten things up a bit!!

My 87 MKII has brown bottom paint, brown boot stripe, and tan non-skid...i use micron csc brown for the bottom. i just changed my canvas to "Linen" color from what looks like might have been the toast color. also i am repainting the boot stripe as soon as it warms up with interlux 4390 chocalate brown (hope it's the right color brown) any comments? also will use interlux 4280 gray primer.

The linen canvas looks good with the whites and tans topside... can't wait to check out all the Cape Dorys this July!!!!

Murray Glue wrote: Actually...as folks have said....earlier CDs were blue non-skid, red boot top, blue bottom paint....but then changed their color scheme as the 80s approached. Sunbrella Dark Brown is a nice match to the CD brown scheme. I am not sure that CD actually had an "offical" color scheme for sail covers, etc. In replacing some of my own boat material, it was suggested I keep away from the Sunbrella tan by my dodger maker because they found it does not hold up in the bright sun as well.....looks great at first....

Murray,

What Catherine says is true. The early versions especially the CD25s, etc. had the light blue and even plastic portlights. There is a distinctive CD style and when you check them closely you will see they are genuine CDs. Later CD made an Intrepid line which didn't have the teak and bronze like the usual CDs.

My 1980 CD27 came through with the beige non-skid paint color, but had the red bootstripe and blue bottom paint. I continued the color scheme and she still has it with her current owner today. Last year he had a bimini made and used the Sunbrella (R) blue for it to match the sail cover which I had replaced (in blue) from BOAT/US some years prior. The original sail cover is still in my garage and was brown, but it has faded and deteriorated.

On my current CD28 I used the new Sunbrella (R) "Brass" color which complements the teak well and I used it for the mainsail cover, the club foot jib (Yankee), bimini, dodger, grille cover and cover for the inflatable's outboard engine when mounted on the stern rail. It really looks nice and is a different texture fabric which makes it "standout" nicely.

Best Regards,

Right Cathy,

Original nonskid on Heather Ann was a sky blue color in a close basket weave patten. (Also - no dodger.)

Our CD30 Ketch, "Skywind", had a very worn version of the chocolate brown canvas when we bought her. We debated whether or not to change the color, then decided on Forest Green (sunbrella). We've been admonished a little for straying from the original color, but the green really enhances the dark teak and the "tan" non-skid. We thought the brown made the boat look drab. To each his own!

The Cape Dory 33 in the Sailrite Catalog is ours. We chose the linen color because it is cooler and more pleasing to the eye. We also thought it would look more traditional. The toast seemed alittle too dark or drab at the time.
It also goes nicely with the natural Otis Permisol I used to make the awnings with.
You can't go wrong with the color combination.
