Cowl Vent Woes

Post by casampson »

The top part of my vent on my Typhoon fell overboard and sank last year. I am left with a 3 -1/2 inch opening, but all of the replacement cowl vent units call for 3-3/4 inch cut-out. I am willing to grind out the 1/4-inch difference, but it won't be easy and am looking for a simpler solution.

If anyone has any ideas, I would appreciate it.

Is the vent bronze, plastic, something else? Looks like it is similar in size and bolt pattern to the port lights.

You could make a teak plate/ cover (round or square) for the original hole with a new 3 3/4 " hole to fit a new vent.

Here is a cowl/dorade combo with a stated cutout of 3.6". You may discover that your cutout is slightly oversized and this unit would pop right in.

A marine consignment store might be another source worth investigating.

If you have a hole saw the right size you can make a 3 3/4 hole in a piece of scrap. Screw it down using existing holes or a couple new ones that will be covered by the new vent. Use this as a guide for the holesaw to make a new hole. It can be but doesn't have to be concentric.

how about a Nicro day/night solar mushroom vent as a replacement? great at circulating air to keep the moisture and mildew out of the cabin.

Thank you. I checked out the Nicro vent and the problem is the same: the cut-out is 3-3/4 inches, and my hole is only 3-1/2 inches. I'm going to a marine consignment store this week to see if they have anything. If not, I might buy a 3-3/4 inch hole saw and go that route. My other option is to just cover it for the summer and fix it properly this winter. Time is slipping away.

A REALLY nice thing about the Nicro vent is that the jib lazy sheet will not get caught the way it often does on the standard cowl vent.
