Yanmar YSM8 - cracked exhaust elbow

Post by csoule13 »

Both the yard and the surveyor called out that the exhaust elbow is "Cracked but doesn't seem to be leaking". I'm trying to break projects down by general area and priority(take care of the engine stuff all at once, etc.) I'm not entirely sure what this means, and how one goes about fixing it.

Additionally, one of the engine mounts was described as loose. I assume that's a simple swing of a wrench to tighten up?

As always, thanks helping a rookie get up to speed.

The cracked elbow depends on how urgent it is for you to go sailing. Maybe it won't get any worse, but it sure is not going to get any better. To me, now would seem like the best time to replace it, at midnight on a lee shore with no wind for sailing would be a worse option. A recent issue of Good Old Boat had an excellent article on replacing the exhaust elbow with simple black pipe fittings. Search this board and there probably will be more advice.

It could be, but on a 35 year old boat there are not many occasions where a swing of the wrench is simple.

Best of luck.

I concur with everything Tim said. Before you tighten down the engine mount, I would check the alignment first. After you tighten down, I would check it again.
A bad alignment can cause many problems later on, including transmission ones. - Jean

Thanks guys. The loose mount is going to wait while I tend to more pressing topics. The exhaust elbow is going to be a sooner(much sooner) rather than later. The exhaust hose needs replacing, so those will be handled together. Might as well minimize the boat yoga.
