Started up the engine today. Things that are good - engine starts right up. Plenty of water out of the exhaust. Nice strong sound. All is good. And then I look astern and see what appeared to be the results of my engine coughing out a single black phlegm ball.
What in the heck is this and how do I resolve it? I want to be a good steward of the water here, and seeing this was disappointing.

Some 5 or 6 years ago, I did have a possibly similar discharge of filthy black stuff. Yes, I was worried.
Perhaps this may help?
I was responsible for my lack of TLC and non use. Reasons many, excuses none.
Basically over the previous 6 months or more I failed to use Breezy, plus my zinc anode had been consumed. Yes, I did need to change oil etc.
All resolved once I serviced and started my 1GM Yanmar, gave it a good run for an hour or more on a regular basis, and motored at 20-25 revs, with occasional 3 minute 30-35 bursts with a warmed up motor, but only after about 1 hours motoring.
The standard knowledgeable advise is to run our diesel motors hard for their good health.
I am all relaxed just now after motoring for 2 hours to the northern part of our lake and back again. It is winter in Australia, with 17 degrees today and sun shining, with dead calm this morning.

It is that 1" square plug right on top. If you have not changed it recently you might want to bring along a breaker bar and some muscle.

Thanks Noel. I'm in the middle of replacing several items on the engine. The previous owner and the yard did a great job of keeping it going, but I'm pretty sure they didn't do more than a basic dewinterize as the boat was being sold. So, fuel polishing, tank polishing, new fuel filter(primary and the one on the engine), new belts, new impeller, and new zinc are happening within the next week. And then a long hard motoring. And of course, I ordered double of everything so I have spares.
