Cape Dory 25 Halyard

Post by hinmo »

Hi - did not see specs in my owners manual, boat came w/o halyards and search did not reveal anything.

what size diameter should they be? Do I HAVE to use low stretch?

Thanks

Me too, I need to replace all my rigging.Whats the latest technology on halyard and sheet materials. I don't like to just buy whatever the store says because they obviously want to sell what they stock.. My previous boat had wire/rope halyards .Is that better? Does it depend on what type rollers (sheaves) are on top the mast? I guess I'll probably just get the prespliced halyards from the big store and three strand for the sheets like what is on now. that will last the rest of my life anyway.

John:

My manual is for the CD 25D so I am not sure if the numbers are the same but for the CD 25D the main halyard is 3/8" diameter and 70' length of pre-stretch Dacron. The jib halyard is 3/8" diameter and 73' length of pre-stretch Dacron.

Hopefully, someone will post with numbers for a Cape Dory 25 instead of the Cape Dory 25D - assuming they are different numbers.

Good luck :!:

From the 1981 manual for covering Typhoons thru CD30, both main & jib halyards on the CD25 are 3/8" and 60 feet long.
And, "Yes!" you do want to use low-stretch line; it doesn't have to be high-$$$ stuff, but even back in '81, the manual notes that halyards should be prestretched dacron while sheets could be just dacron.
I would suggest visiting Defender.com and check out their Samson lines. I personally prefer their Trophy braid for jib sheets and XLS for halyards and main sheet on KAYLA.

You don't have to use anything more than Sta-Set, which is still an improvement over the best line available in 1981. Low stretch halyards are better because when the wind builds, they keep the luff tension consistent.

+1 for the XLS on halyards. Great balance between low cost and low stretch. You can drop one size with the new materials compared to 40 years ago. 5/16" would work for a halyard, if your hands are OK with it.

Wire/rope was a desperation move to deal with the al dente strength of lines. Replace it with all rope, and check that any sheaves are not worn out or undersize.

Yale PHD Cruiser has exceptional grip and is very soft to hold, perfect for mainsheets. Go as big as possible- 7/16 or 1/2".

Anything for sheets- I like the look and non slippery feel of NE Vintage Sta-Set.

Measure lengths with a test cord, I find that the lengths in the manual are sometimes 10' longer than needed. If the main is long enough to reach the end of the boom and the jib can be cleated to the pulpit, I'm happy.

Are your halyards led aft to cockpit...? If so make sure you add for the extra length.
