I have an earlier version of this SailorsSolutions LED light, also with a photo cell for auto turn off at dawn. It was part of my plan to go mostly LED 7-8 years back. It's USCG approved beyond the required range. The oil lamps are salty and all that but the idea of oil burning above my deck never made me feel warm and fuzzy. I wouldn't worry about the use of non approved lights if I always anchored in remote areas but in busy areas (especially with a lot of power boats) I would think about liability issues using a non approved light.

In general all of the products Sailors Solutions sells are well made and reasonably priced.

Concur. Sailor solutions is a very good system.

I don't have a robust electrical system. Even for LED--it's an optional only system for me. Additionally, though I am not an admiralty lawyer, 2014 US Coast Guard Navigation, Rules, and Regulations, Annex I, para 11 states "Non electric lights shall so far as practicable comply with the minimum intensities, as specified in the table given in action 8 of this Annex."

I think it's important to be legal, safe, and comfortable with your choices. I agree, there are some high traffic areas that I would want max illum when anchoring near them. But, I tend to stay away from those places and when unable carefully select where I anchor to get max separation from those routes. High speed ferry routes in the Virgin Islands comes to mind.

John:

Thanks for the reference to ebay. As most on this board know, I am old and old-fashioned and VERY uncomfortable giving my credit card information online. I also do not like buying anything sight unseen.

I will continue to look. I personally like the idea of an oil lamp as anchor light. I have an "extra" spinnaker halyard that I could use to raise the lamp.
Fair winds,

Roberto

This site defaults to German, but if you click on the Union Jack in the upper right, it converts to English.
I have had excellent service from them.

Traditional navigation lights on their site:

I'm disinclined to acquiesce to your request. Means no.

R&W Ropes in New England is the importer for a lot of the stuff Toplitch sells. It's a great site. I found the bronze fairleads I use on the Far Reach there as well as my kerosene stern running light.
