CDI Furlers

Post by jneely »

Does anyone have experience qwith a CDI furler on a CD 27 or larger? The Furlex on our CD 27 Troika needs to be replaced. The cost of a new Furlex is considerably more than the CDI, but I would like to hear from some CDI users before making the choice. Thanks for all replies.

This is a thread discussing some different furlers for a CD 27.

If you do a search of CDI furlers on this board you will find several other threads.

As my post from last year suggests, my rigger likes Harken and Schaefer. He does NOT like CDI. The local sailboat racing group at Matheson Hammock has (had) a fleet of 7-8 Harbor 20s. The owner installed CDI furlers and has been very happy.

I have installed 2 CDI fulers (one on a CP16 and one on a Catalina 25). They worked great. I am about to install one on my CD25. Purchased a FF4 and am in the process of equipping the boat with new fore and aft stays.. Loved the simplicity and ease of install with the CDIs.

I had a Furlex on my last boat, a Cal 27, and it worked smoothly and reliably. My brother had a CDI on a smaller day sailor
(less than 20'). The CDI has a small diameter internal halyard that made it somewhat of a pain to raise and lower the sail. Also, the
plastic foil warped when it was stored inside his greenhouse. He corrected it a bit by applying heat and weights, but it
never really straightened out.
If it were my choice, I'd go for a Furlex or one of the other "big boat" furlers. Maybe you could get one used at one
of the boat salvage yards. Good luck with your decision. - Jean

I've had a CDI furler on my 28 for about two decades. Zero problems with zero maintenance. It performs as advertised.

One plus of the internal haryard is that the jib halyard remains available. I've used it as a spare when the main halyard sent itself aloft (okay, it had a bit of help from a crew member), and use it often as a safety line otherwise when someone goes up in the bosun's chair.
