Do you have a pilot berth on the port side of your boat?

No pilot berth on Danusia, CD31 built 1984. Same shelving as on the starboard side. Don't think I can squeeze my corpulent self in that space!

quick diversion!

Since switching from dropbox to google drive to store my pictures, links to share photos now appear on this board as a hyperlink rather than an embedded photo, (as above). Anyone know what I am doing wrong?

My CD31 built in 85, currently named Jersey Girl, does have a berth on the port side.

My CD-31 has a berth on the port side too but it's not a pilot berth. So far I haven't heard of or from any CD-31 skipper with a pilot berth on their boat as advertised.

Hello Cape Dory 31 Owners,

Some where in the old advertising info there is a line drawing showing the interior of the CD 31.
The drawing shows a pilot berth on the port side above the settee. The pilot berth looks big enough for a small child.
Maybe it never made it into production. I will try and locate the drawing.

It's here under "Layout and equipment list". I don't think that the actual production yachts were able to accommodate the "pilot berth", hence the lack of six berths in the CD31. The graphic has several notable differences, such as the starboard shelf was originally divided by cabinetry in the conceptual drawings. Concept doesn't always make it to reality.

As the caretaker of a Cape Dory 25D (S/V Bali Ha'i) I do not have a dog in this fight regarding a pilot berth.

That said, it appears this issue has generated a significant debate, with those on the side of "I have a pilot berth" standing in staunch opposition to those on the side of "CD 31s did not have a pilot berth".

I believe the only way to resolve this matter is to request that the US Congress convene a special investigative committee within the House Oversight Committee to investigate this matter and determine once and for all the answer to Captain Hook's question. Subpoenas, immunity, compelled testimony, etc., may well be involved in the path to resolution.
Fair winds,

Sorry, Roberto, but you'll have to wait until free-wheeling vs locked prop investigation is completed first...

We just noticed this debate about a pilot berth on the 31s. Nice research by Jim Walsh.

A true pilot berth would have made the roomy (for an older boat) cabin seem a bit more cramped, so we're glad they never realized the concept.

We stopped by the Robinhood yard on Wednesday on our way over to Nova Scotia to see our new engine (Beta 25). Wow, it's a lot smaller than the M-25, or seems that way. Not so many skinned knuckles or cursing when I'm working on it. Hope it passes sea trial in June.

All else well. We'll be on the Maine coast for most or all of the summer, so we're looking forward to seeing old CD friends and making some new ones.

Enjoy the spring outfitting, a special time of the year for all sailors.
