CD 30K update

Post by JD-MDR »

"Leoma" is at the SanFrancisco Boatworks now . The bottom has been stripped and painted, There is a new shaft and etc. and they are tearing out the chain/backing plates as I type. I am so sad to see the same boat listed for sale at $15000. I will probably have $40000 in mine before it could sell for $15000. That just means that I will need to get $25000 worth of use out of her. Which should be no problem. At least I'm not wasting my hard earned money on drugs and alcholol. I plan to sail her down to my homeport at LA(MDR) this summer and the rest of the restoration I can do myself and on my own time. Wish me luck.Any comments and encouragement appreciated...P.S. How do I find out what hull no. she is.

I can sympathize with sale price vs investment. You serial number will give both the hull number and the yr. built. On my cd25 it is on the starboard side of the transom. Mine is four letters the hull number another letter and then yr. built. AAAA0674M78A... Hull 674 built in 78

Good luck on your refurbishment. I know it can't be justified purely on a financial basis but pleasure has a price too. Money spent on anything which brings you pleasure is money well spent.
It would be great if you could post some pictures.

First, unless you are old and computer illiterate like me ( :cry: ) you are required to post photos of all renovations, upgrades, etc., as the work progresses. Since you are new to this board this gross oversight will be forgiven this one time. :wink:

Second, as for hull number, it should be on the starboard side of the stern of your CD 30K "etched" into the hull. It should be a combination of letters and numbers with a grand total of about 12. The HIN should also be on the title certification. Once you have it, here's a way to "interpret" the hull number.

Several years ago Good Old Boat ("GOB") published an excellent article on hull identification numbers (HINs).

As GOB explains it, the characters (numbers or letters) in the "model-year format" which existed prior to 01 January 1984 are decoded as follows:

Character positions 1, 2 & 3 of the HIN are the manufacturer's identification code and assigned by the US Government;

Character positions 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8 of the HIN are an alpha-numeric serial number established by the manufacturer;

Character position 9 of the HIN could be the letter "M" if the sailboat was built before 01 January 1984. The letter "M" signifies the manufacturer is using the "model-year format" not the "numerical straight-year format";

Character positions 10 & 11 are the year of manufacture; and

Character position 12 is a letter indicating the month of manufacture in the "model-year format". Interestingly, this lettering starts with the letter "A" signifying August; "B" is September; "C" is October, etc.

Before 01 January 1984, if a manufacturer wanted to, he (or she) could alternatively use the "numerical straight year format" instead of the "model-year format". Then characters are decoded as follows:

1-8 are the same as above for the "model-year format";

9, 10, 11 & 12 would be the month and year of manufacture. Instead of an "M" at character 9 signifying "model-year format" there would be a number as part of the month (2 digits), followed by year (2 digits).

Post 01 January 1984 you could use another third format which is called the "new format" (catchy phrase). In the "new format", the characters are decoded as follows:

1-8 are the same as above for the "model-year format";

9 is the month of manufacture - "A" is January, "B" is February, etc.

10 is a number digit signifying the last digit of the year of manufacture or certification

11 and 12 are the model year.

I hope this helps a little.

Roberto

What do you have built into the area under the stove in the first picture? I have been looking for a place to fit a bus heater and that may well be it, Steve.

It's just a hollow space . that is a Carbon Monoxide sensor I think. The stove is disconnected .I took out the fuel lines I think there was a tank on deck. but the fuel lines were all kinked and shabby looking.
