cape dory 28 sacrificial zincs

Post by arch007 »

I did a search but am confused as to sizes and zincs needed for a cape dory 28.

I believe perry is out of business and camp is recommended.

What size zinc is needed for the propeller ?

http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/us ... eller+Nuts# only shows a 1-1/4 in.

Also is there a sacrificial zinc for the MD7A engine ?

If so what size is it andwhere can I buy it ?

Thanks,

That page is a bit confusing.

I believe those Zincs are replacements for the Camp propeller nut (which may very well be what you have). They come in a variety of sizes based on the size of your shaft. Here is a link to the actual Camp page which lists replacements by shaft size and thread rather than outside diameter (which after a season is smaller anyway!)

If you have a Camp propeller nut it will look like the diagram on the top right of the chart where it says "Standard Brass Propeller Nut Kit" (link below).

http://www.campcompany.com/home.php?cat=43

The replacement zincs are shown on this page:

http://www.campcompany.com/home.php?cat=42

For example if you have a 1" shaft it would take the "CN" Nut Kit and the "CC" Replacement Anode (Zinc) You should check your shaft size, this is just an example!

On the Jamestown Distributors page the part number would be "CAM-CC" for the Anode and the Nut would be "CAM-CN".

The CD31 also has a 1" shaft. I use this replacement zinc.

The item you noted is only necessary if you require the entire unit.

Why not just use the 2 piece zinc that clamps on to the 1" shaft. That's all I use and it has worked flawlessly,

A prop nut zinc was originally specified because there was no room for a streamlined shaft zinc as there is very little exposed shaft between the cutlass bearing and the prop. I have less than 2" of shaft exposed. The CD28 must be about the same. A collar zinc would adversely effect water flow to the prop.

I use a prop nut zinc with no troubles. 1/3 wears off each season, and I typically just replace it each year.

Same deal with the exposed shaft- not enough room for a collar. (by design)

Here's a hyperlink to the section on this site which has the information you seek. Just look under "Engine/Transmission Manuals" and you're all set.

Hi all,

The previous owner of my boat upgraded to this fancy prop which seems to accommodate two zincs. I'm assuming the collar is for a 1" prop but I have no idea how to size the zinc on the end of the shaft. Any ideas?

I think you have a Variprop. Presumably they can provide the anode particulars.

I use the simple shaft zink on my 28.....simple and inexpensive...oval circle takes about an inch.

I called variprop this weekend and was able to get parts I need.

Next up is the CD stuffing box wrenches. Can't seem to find anyone at spartan or robinhood....

Perhaps Presidents Day is the culprit. Give them a call in the morning.

If your stuffing box is mounted the same as mine (end of stern tube), I wouldn't spend the money...
They won't fit in the lack of space available. A flat bar and small hammer is your best bet.
