Possibilities - NE Fleet float-in in NY Harbor (July 2017)

Post by Cathy Monaghan »

I'd like to plan a couple of rendezvous/float-ins this year. It's been awhile since I've done this, and we have some non-boating travel plans in August which prevent us from travelling too far by water this year, but I think I can pull it off.

How do you folks feel about meeting in New York Harbor some time in mid-July -- say, the weekend of July 14-16 or July 21-23?

My plan would be to meet Friday afternoon/evening at Pier 25 on the west side of Manhattan. Pier 25 is part of Hudson River Park. Both moorings and dockage are available as are restrooms. It's location, in Tribeca, also means there's lots to do.

Saturday we would sail/race past the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island southward beneath the Verrazano Bridge and onward to Atlantic Highlands in NJ. We'll make sure we get there early enough so that's there plenty of room to anchor. Moorings and dockage are also available.

Sunday folks can start heading back to their homeports or continue their cruises.

If you're interested, please let me know which dates you'd prefer and I'll set it up.

Thanks,
Cathy

Hi Cathie,

Maybe it was a typo, but to avoid confusion of visiting sailors, the location of the sail-in is on the West side of Manhattan, not the East. I hope that I can make it.

Take care,

You are very correct, Pier 25 is on the west side of Manhattan. It is just north of the World Financial Center and Battery Park City. Anyway, I've corrected it in my posting above.

Also at Pier 25, you'll find the 142' wooden schooner Grand Banks. She is now an oyster bar. She was christened in 1942 as the F/V Sherman Zwicker. She is the last original saltbank fishing vessel in existence. She is the sistership of the famous Bluenose. For the past 30 years she spent her summers docked at the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath. I wish she was still a museum ship.

The Lilac is also berthed at Pier 25. She is a historic steam-powered lighthouse tender built in 1933.

Offshore Sailing School also has a base at Pier 25 as well as the Manhattan Sailing School.

Cathy - I am always interested in CD events, especially float-ins though I haven't made one yet. Something always comes up either with my boat or my schedule. This one seems very intriguing and I have always thought about sailing from Port Jefferson to NYC just to pass under the bridges and to experience seeing the skyline from the water.

So please put me down as interested.
