Replacement port light on a 1979 CD 25 before the Spartan po

Post by flyboy5724 »

The boat yard removed the large port on my 1979 CD 25 and cracked the frame trim ring. Does anyone know who can make one or buy a replacement port. Previous owner used 5200 instead of 4200.

You could try e-mailing MassMarine Parts, a salvage yard in Quincy, Mass. Their e mail address is jon@massmarineparts.com They have parted out two Cape Dory 25's.
Failing any luck with a replacement part, you could buy two small rectangular ports and,
with a little glass work, make it look aesthetically pleasing. Or, you could put in a large
oval port such as Bomar's stainless opening port (item 901707) (about 24 x 8) that's on sale at Defender for $150.
Again, there would probably be glass work as the length is probably not long enough
to cover the existing hole. Also, the height might be too much for the cabin side and aesthetics.
Some people have surface mounted acrylic with acorn nuts showing on the outside. That
wouldn't look good on a traditional boat like a cape dory. In any case, good luck - Jean

Do not replace those bronze portlight with SS. If you can't find a replacement trim ring, call Sheri at Mystic River Foundry. I am certain she can cast you a new one from your pattern. She is very reasonable in terms of cost and pretty quick as well. Also, you can send the broken trim ring to Port Townsend Foundry. Pete Langley will make you a perfect replica but it may take a while.

Either way, it will be back in shape in no time with your bronze portlights.

Here is a link to how we bedded our Spartan portlights.

Looks like a pre-bronze port light CD25... ie. Aluminum frames for deadlights.

Oh my. I didn't even notice those were not bronze. I didn't know there were any CDs without bronze Portlights. Shows how much I know.

The 1976-early 1980 port lights were plastic. The 1974-1975 port lights were aluminum frames, late 1980- 1984 were spartan marine port lights. I am looking for the large aft plastic framed port light. I included a photo of my boat to show it as an example of what I was looking for. Thank you for your help. By the way the typhoon, CD 25, and CD 28 all had plastic windows in the 1970's. Spartan port lights went into use around 1977 for most models.
