Re: Lazy jacks
An E-Z Jax system eliminates that problem with the battens, because the E-Z Jaxs do not need to be deployed until it is time to lower the main.

Here is the link to the info I used to set up the lazy jacks on the Far Reach. After 3500 nautical miles I am happy with them. I can't answer why your battens are hanging up on the way down. That seems unexpected. Part of the key to making them work is to not set the top to high. If I only had single spreaders I might actually attach the top end about 6-8" out from the mast on the underside of the spreaders. But I have a double spreader rig. Go no higher than half way though if you chose this method as that will help.
As I mentioned earlier in this thread I have not had a problem. I have raised and lowered them many times in winds to 35 knots and light winds too. Without an engine I can't always point the boat straight into the wind but I have not had too much trouble.
There are certainly a number of ways to successfully construct lazy jack.
