HAND, REEF, AND STEER

Post by John Stone »

On the First Day of Christmas, my true love gave to me: Tom Cunliffe's Hand, Reef, and Steer.

What a delightfully informative and interesting book. While it is specifically written for "traditional sail/gaffers" there is a lot of useful information regarding sail handling, heavy and light air sailing, maneuvering a long keeled boat, anchoring under sail, reefing and maneuvering techniques.

This book is all about sailing and as such it addresses many of the same topics that often comes up in the forum. There are no photos or discussion of interiors, hull designs, the best anchor, or whether to sail with the propeller shaft locked or free wheeling (I just couldn't resist :D ).

The writing is clean, thoughtful, and humerous. The many color pictures are gorgeous. There are lots of diagramed drawings. And for those with an interest in gaffers specifically, your curiosity will be nicely rewarded.

John:
Thanks for the recommendation, I am always on the lookout for a good read. While on the subject, I just bought a copy of an old, but well written book on windjamming. Richard Baums "By the Wind". Copyright 1962, he was a contributor to Yachting and Rudder, among others. His boat was Little Dipper, a 35 ft Starling Burgess wooden cutter. He got rid of the engine. I think you will really enjoy this. Amazon is great.

Great book. I've read it in the past but don't have a copy in my library. I think the cover photo is stunning. I know many "modern" designs are outstanding sailers but to me the older designs are just beautiful expressions of sailing craft and I can easily overlook the competitive edge in favor of the romance of sail.

I agree Jim. And the old designs were very seakindly . . . just like our Cape Dories.

Interestingly, I saw Little Dipper for sale on-line a few years ago. She looked exactly the same. Though sadly she had been violated by the addition of an engine, which to me seems sad given her history. But she looked to be in OK shape. Still long and lean.

Since we are in the subject of Little Dipper, a quick internet search produced the following.
