Has anybody out there ever shipped, via truck, a CD 36, or other big keel boat? Can you recommend anyone? I am looking to ship this summer from Annapolis, Md to Texas. Can you share your lessons learned. Any bad experiences? Any specific companies that you would not recommend?
Thanks,
John Stone

I used Tom Brownell to haul my Tartan 33 from West Palm beach to New London without incident. He is recommended by many in New England. Seems you will miss a beautiful sail & except for the time involved a much less expensive trip.John Stone wrote: Has anybody out there ever shipped, via truck, a CD 36, or other big keel boat? Re: CD 36 -- TRUCK TRANSPORTATION
We used Triton Marine in Oriental, NC to truck Parfait, our CD-36, from Orange Beach, AL (near Mobile) to Oriental, NC in October of 1999. Paul Welles did a fine job both hauling and launching. They got good marks from the yard in Orange Beach. I wanted to sail, but time would not allow it. I now think it would not have been a good thing to do as we were unfamilar with the boat and first needed some lower risk time with her.
You can find Triton Marine at:

Re: CD 36 -- TRUCK TRANSPORTATION
John,I have sailed Annapolis to Sarasota, Fl. more than once. I would estimate 15 to 17days to Sarasota, and probably that much more to, say Houston. You might get some old salt like me, with delivery experience, and retired to put together a crew to do it for $100 a day plus expenses. We don't use marinas much, mostly stay on the hook. You have to figure 2/3 or more of the time on the engine as the wind never seems to cooperate, that translates into approximately 180 hours on the engine using about 150 plus gallons of diesel.Figure a marina every 3rd or 4th night at $45 per night on average ($450) food for the crew, ($400)and a rent a car, 2 to 3 nights in a motel, gas, and restaurant food, let's say $400' You are up to $4000 or so plus the wear and tear on the boat. Now if you are retired and have a significant other for crew, that's a different matter, then go for it.John Stone wrote: Has anybody out there ever shipped, via truck, a CD 36, or other big keel boat? I shipped Ragtime from Trappe, Md. to Ashtabula, Ohio in May of 1999 via Boat Haulers out of Michigan (and other places). The number is 1-800-622-1744. They travel the US and I was well satisfied. I got 3 quotes and they were 20% under the next guy. You do need to have a cashiers check on the other end when it arrives.
Good sailing! or trucking.
