Glue remover

Post by Scott B. »

I have successfully removed old tape glue (duct tape in particular. Please don't ask how it got there) from stainless steel pulpit and stern rails and the aluminum mast, although it takes some elbow grease, with mineral spirits. But I now have some stubborn tape on the desk fiberglass (used to hold done the hatch during a road move). is mineral spirits still the answer or will that be aggressive to the glass? what else can I use if I need to?

You might try GOO GONE, made by Magic American Products, Cleveland. www.GooGone.com.

Comes in an 8-oz. bottle, and is available in hardware stores, and possibly elsewhere. Test-try it in a remote spot.

Worked for me.

"Goo Gone" works and won't harm the fiberglass.

If those don't work or if you have some lying around, try denatured alcohol (methylated spirits). That worked for me taking off some tape residue that was 10 years old on the stern deck, but smooth and non skid.

I cleaned up some tape residue from when we bought the boat and trucked it. I actually put the tape on to prevent something from flapping around. It was a plastic similar to shrink wrap tape. I took it off when fitting out the boat but a bunch of it stuck and I couldn't get it all off. After looking at the residue turn black for 10 years I finally got serious with some denatured alcohol on a rag and rubbed it off a few years ago. Deck gelcoat and original nonskid paint all seems fine.

Bye. Is that the same as "mineral spirits"?
