insurance question

Post by Megunticook »

Just got my annual renewal notice for boat insurance--went up $34 this year to $334. This is for a TySenior with $15K replacement value for boat and trailer (based on marine survey I had done when I bought the boat three years ago).

Wondering if this premium is getting a little on the pricey side.

Company is Progressive, I did have to make a claim a couple years ago to replace the mast and they were super easy to deal with and more than fair.

Just be curious what others are paying and whether I ought to start shopping around. Insurance is the single biggest component of our annual operating budget, and I'd rather not pay more than I need to.

I am also with Progressive and have been since 1999. I don't think you can find a more reasonable company myself, especially given the age of our boats. The premium seems to be some basic amount plus a factor based on your "valuation." I have my CD28 valued at 20k and the premium is currently 412. However, I have 50 years of sailing experience and I have never had to file a claim (knock on wood...).

Sure wish my insurance premium was my biggest annual expense... the 2400 slip fee is nearly 6 times my premium. But that's the price I pay for being able to sail year round - just load the cooler and go! :)

Hurricane Sandy's claims/expenses need to be recouped.
