What is the width of the base of a typhoon keel?

Post by NineIron »

I'm making some modifications to my trailer and would like to place a couple of 2X4's so the keel will ride between them, it doesn't look like I have enough room. Any thoughts?
Also, pardon my ignorance but, is all the weight of the boat suppose to rest on the keel as opposed to the stands?

My guess is the keel would be about 6-8 inches wide, but I am not positive as it has been a long time.

Definitely design it to place the weight on the keel. When we got our Typhoon it had been hastily put on the trailer and left for years. There was a 5 inch wide by 1.5 inch deep indent in the hull from too much weight on the trailer stand. I got it out by placing a heat lamp on it with a basement jack gently applying pressure on it from the inside for about a week.

Definitely let the boat rest on the keel. The side supports are only to prevent the boat from rocking over. The hull cannot support the boat since it is solid fiberglass that may develop hairline fractures from pron]longed and recurring flexing from the hull supports. The width of the keel is somewhere near 6". Instead of using the 2x4 method I used 1" x 1/3" bar stock with PVC pipe running the length of the trailer support to act as rails to guide the boat onto the trailer. The bar stock flexes as the boat is positioned. It works great. If I can locate my photos of this setup I will attach to another reply. Otherwise send me a pm so I can email them. To balance the boat on the trailer, position the forward curve of the keel over the trailer axle. Make sure that the aft end of the keel where the rudder is attached is not taking the weight of the boat since it is hollow and not as stri=ong as the part with the lead ballast.
