cape dory 27 overhead water leak

Post by john willoughby »

Water is leaking onto the top of the liner, below the deckhouse,, and spills out upon heeling into the forward cabin, onto the port side ash strips and bedding below. I have looked and looked and cannot find the source of the leak. Please, someone have an answer for me!

Have to take a close look (and maybe a hose) to everything that punctures the coach roof (including the mast step). See "TRYING TO FIND A LEAK please help" for ideas and remember, water can travel before it shows it self. Also check dorade, companion way hatch, etc for caulking or screw leaks.

In general, boat leaks are the most difficult things to locate. What I have found to help is to think like a leak. The water will always follow gravities lead, and will go downhill. So try to determine the center of the affected area, and work uphill from there. If the solution is not clear, proceed to plan B.
PLAN B: This plan takes a lot more time and effort, but will locate every little leak that you have onboard. In this plan, you wil be using that great big industrial sized shop vac that you just got for Christmas. With it, you will use the inflating port on the vac. to pump air pressure into the boats interior. In order for this to work, all areas not to be tested should be separated out from the rest of the boat with plastic sheeting taped well to the boats structure. As you start pressurizint the interior, you will discover tons of leaks..some known and accepted..some unexpected. Use Duct Tape to cover the leaks, one at a time..and a soap and water solution to find the leqaks that are not obvious. Eventually, you will whittle it down to the one that is causing you grief. Likely culprits are the stanchion bases, bow pulpit base, leaking hatch frame, anchor hawse pipe..etc.etc.etc... oi!

Good Luck..not a fun job, but it has to be more fun than a wet bunk, heh?

Cheers!

John,

I had the same problem on my CD-27. Not much to finding or fixing it. The point of leaking that wasn't immediately apparent (let's face it, the leak sources on the CD-27 are pretty obvious if you have a brain) was under the sea hood. First, it wasn't bedded properly around the edges and under the screwheads along the forward edge. I placed a screw between each of the factory screws when I rebedded it on the forward edge only. The true culprit in my case was the athwartships sealing under the companionway slide. While it doesn't look like this can flow downhill to the interior the hose test showed it clearly doing so. To properly bed this means removing the sliding hatch, stripping out the old bedding, cleaning thoroughly with acetone and sealing with LifeCaulk. This leak was significant and was coming out of the plate under the mast step!

Check it out. It's an easy couple of hours to check and repair.
