Youtube Dilemma
Browsing some Boat repair videos on Youtube I came across a repair that struck me as a really bad idea and something that could be dangerous considering its a hookup for a bilge pump. First off here's the video- the section I worry about is at about 1:30 min in.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meHzZ9T ... e=youtu.be
I'm wondering if others think this is a bad idea. The hose needs something more substantial to clamp to? I could see the inner hose being easily pushed out.

Re: Youtube Dilemma
Bad idea. The pumps port should match the hose I.D..

Re: Youtube Dilemma
And then the next one talks about replacing a "worn traveler line" when they're really looking at the main sheet???
Geez! There are lot's of idiots out there posting garbage...
I, for one, miss the good ol' days before "www" when you could trust most of what you found in news groups.
That was way before "AOL" brought the great unwashed public to the internet...

Re: Youtube Dilemma
I always get a chuckle from hearing people use the Internet to complain about the existence of the Internet. (While I am not sure who the "great unwashed public" is, it sounds like a group to which I would like to belong - if I don't already)

Re: Youtube Dilemma
Scary to think he actually "paid for" that "expert" advice.... Wow....
Re: Youtube Dilemma
Internet and "www" are not the same thing, except for folks that never experienced the Internet before the "www" came about... I wasn't complaining about the existence (I "go to work" via the Internet every day), just remembering the good old days when you could trust 95% of what you found online.Gary H wrote:I always get a chuckle from hearing people use the Internet to complain about the existence of the Internet. I too remember this "good old days", before there was a dot com. We used a dot edu for access. I remember voting against the idea of opening the internet to commercial use, now I use dot coms all the time.

I'd not knock on the marine tech so fast... did she sign off on the work afterwards? The vid paints it as fire and forget on her part.
Years ago, I wished that Norm would one day hold a nail gun to Steve's head on This Old House... This youtube host now occupies that vat of festering lava inside me.
And Steve Thomas is happily restoring a family house in Port Clyde, as the standup guy that he is.

Re: Youtube Dilemma
Steve was a better actor than I gave credit for. He needed to play the everyday man, who needed everything explained to him, really slowly.
Anyway, a few of the other boat videos were a hoot. Sure do wish I had a first mate that was a first rate diesel mechanic... We had a very good sail from Camden to South Harbor, around North Haven, and back last weekend. This weekend looks like raindrop dodging Sun/Mon, with some swells rolling in too.

Re: Youtube Dilemma
Notice how everything on a boat has a name, very often in the form of nautical lingo? Don't take boat advice from anyone who talks about parts such as "the little curvy thing" or "the round thing."
