On the rocks

Post by moctrams »

My friend has a Westsail 32 and had a bad experience. There is a lesson here; don't depend on other people to drive the boat.

10th, 2:10pm
Dice: Hello Pal... things are a bit messed up here in George town and grueling hot. I said I was going to call you. Did I or was it a dream... seriously.!!!
A couple days ago we started north and I gave the tiller to my brother and went below for a couple minutes and he ran us into the reefs.
2 hours side to side banging away at the boat.90° angle to 90° angle taking water on sides... but the hull never penetrated and some fisherboats pulled us out. Back in Georgetown accessing damage. Afloat. What a boat.
Epirb, flares, the whole bit but no mayday... my vhf not working.

Interesting. A westsail 32 is tough boat! My father and I had one for a few years. We put a grounding plate on it and the solid laminate was 3/4" thick below the waterline. The weakness when hitting a reef with one is the rudder, it built like a surfboard foam core, fiberglassed. The rudder is an easy repair as well.
