Oil leak

Post by abcnuzeman »

I developed a pin hole leak in the oil line on my YANMAR 1GM just below the impeller housing that dripped occasionally and started some corrosion. I've ordered replacement lines, washers and bolts and hope to tackle the job myself. I have only the simplest understanding of diesel mechanics but I have the manual and some helpful books. Does anyone have experience with this repair and any words of caution for me? And if you have any suggestions for cleaning up the mess in the engine compartment, I'd love to hear them.

This is quite an easy job since the lines and bolts are accessible.

Took me under an hour to do both lines. There will be residual oil in the line.

Also, this will be a short term fix as thus us common to the 1 gm10. I recommend putting additional coats of paint on the lines, others have built a shield to deflect the dripping...

Cleaned up the oil with a cheap hand pump and then oil absorbing rags. Then used some dawn dishwashing liquid and water..

Just wanted to update the oil leak repair. All went as expected and after some clean up, spent the rest of the day sailing. I checked the oil level on my return and there was no obvious leaks. I'll the change the diaper under the engine and continue to look for any dripping. I also covered the new pipes with some aluminum foil to protest against drips from the impeller cover. I can change these easily when they start to show corrosion. Thanks to this forum for my continuing education in Cape Dory maintenance.
