Thanks to all those posting info in response to my prior posting. New question: What would rebuilding an MD7A encompass? I would assume new rings, and injectors. Anything else? What would be a reasonable cost for this? Thanks!

Rebuild MD7A

Re: Rebuild MD7A
Pete,
Rebuilding the MD7A/B involves new rings, bearings, valve guides, resurfacing of the head, oil seals, injectors pulled and rebuilt, injector pump pulled and rebuilt, valves replaced as needed, new antisiphon ballcheck valves and springs (2) for injector pump output lines, etc. I would also clean out the cooling system..maybe add a new thermostat, new crushable washers for the fuel system. About 5 years ago or so, it cost me $2500 including labor and crane time to pull the engine, lift into pick-up truck, and reinstall the engine on it's bed. I did the alignment and reinstallation of cables and wiring etc.
Last year my mechanic estimated the same job at over $5000. Parts have gone way up in price. However, if you use that UK source for Volvo parts, it appears that you can save a considerable amount.
Whether the engine rebuilder will pass this to you or not is a question you need to ask.
Incidently, I bet there is not a day that goes by without my *appreciating* my rebuilt engines starting capabilities, and power. It works perfectly..and I have around5-600 hrs on it since the overhaul.

Re: Rebuild MD7A
while he is at it, get the block dipped to get rid of all the deposits in the cooling system especially if it is raw water cooled. it will also get rid of the carbon and sludge deposits. i just had a '53 flathead v8 block done and it came out looking factory new.

A word of caution about dipping engine parts
dipping engine parts (to clean them) can actually introduce dirt into otherwise clean oil passages found within said parts. Then when the engine is started up the first time after reassembly, the dirt is pumped into engine bearings causing all kinds of nasty problems. Many extremely clean looking rebuilt engines experience short service lives for this reason.
