Was an oil lamp standard equipment on a CD 31?

Post by Capt Hook »

My boat has a gimbal mounted oil lamp on the forward bulkhead of the main cabin.

It looks very vintage and has WALES CYMRU inscribed on it and a dragon.

Looks like something Cape Dory might have put on the boat but I don't see it listed on the Standard Equipment list.

But I can't find the sixth berth that's listed on the Standard Equipment list so maybe I got an oil lamp in its place.

It was missing when I bought the boat so it was too late to file a police report.

Actually I'm not missing a whole berth.

I'm only missing a quarter berth. Perhaps it's so small I just overlooked it.

OOPS! It's not a quarter berth I'm missing; it's a pilot berth.

Cymru is Welsh for Wales. A dragon appears on the flag of Wales. I'd say a Welshman was the owner of the lamp. Perhaps it was a presentation piece since it was inscribed. An oil lamp was not standard equipment.
As for the sixth berth....the advertising budget apparently did not include funds for a copy editor.

My CD 31 also has a gimbal mount (but no lantern) mounted on the forward bulkhead of the main cabin. I am the third owner, i suspect the lantern was looted somewhere along the line. so there may be something to the idea of the builder throwing in some undocumented standard equipment.

Hey Capt. Hook,

We also have a 31 and, to the best of our knowledge, the model never had a quarter berth. The trade-off is larger cockpit lockers that even stiff old me can (some days) wiggle into for servicing seacocks, stuffing box, fridge, water heater, etc.

Happy sailing

The CD31 never had a quarter berth. It always had the head in that position. There should be a pilot berth on the port side. If you count that, you've got 6.

I've heard that a pilot berth was an option on the CD31. Yankee has a shelf and lockers on the port side above a settee, mirroring what's to starboard, except that the pull-out "double" berth is only on the starboard side. Actually, not sure what was the standard layout and what was the option. Jim
