1977 CD 28 pre purchase questions
The boat is getting surveyed on Tuesday but I have a couple questions for any of you that know what would have been original on the boat, (it looks very original.) First off the seacocks, very helpful answers to my previous question RE: only one hose clamp. The other things missing from the seacocks on this boat are backing plates and handles save for the head's gate valve and the head's water supply. (I have some jpegs but I don't know how to post them in message.) Just as it seems that originally the Spartan Seacocks only had one hose clamp I am wondering if it could be likely that the seacocks were installed without backing plates. I wonder because the valves at the head are mounted on the cabin liner and I don't see any obvious shadow of a backing plate. I suppose the original ply backing plates might have rotted away and the seacocks and thru-hulls were re-bedded without them, but that seems sort of strange. And why would one remove all the handles?
Next I have a question about the halyards. In the brochures and manuals from this vintage the halyards and topping lift are described as being made of pre-stretched Dacron. The halyards and topping lift now on the boat are wire/cordage spliced and wire. My question is if the original sheaves at the masthead were for Dacron would they be damaged by being used over the years for wire? Running rigging is all three strand.
Last question can somebody tell me where the Bow Light is on the rigging. The other evening I was checking the lights and the deck and running lights were pretty obvious even before turning on, couldn't find the Bow light.
The previous owner passed away and boat was donated so there isn't too much information.

Interesting that you have no handles. My 28 also had no handles. Perhaps one had to pay extra for them in the day. Not an issue I just use a spanner. Look at your thrum hulls for your cockpit drains...they should be against the hull and have a backing plate....likewise drain for sink thruhull should also be against the hull and not a liner.
Great boat....you will be happy with it.

Bow light should be on the pulpit. Look for a broken bracket weld and a hole for the wire near the forward point. A wire may be visible coming out in the chain locker too.
The sheaves will need to be checked, but unless they are plastic, they should be fine. If they are galled, you"ll end up eating halyards. And they need to be cleaned and lubed anyway...
Enjoy a great boat!

Are you referring to the red and green bow light or the steaming (or masthead light)? You mentioned that you had found the running lights. They can either be on the cabin sides or on the bow pulpit. But if you found those then you may be looking for the white light that is shown forward when under power. That is usually a double light fixture partway up the mast. The lower light is a deck (sometimes called a spreader light as it may be on or near the spreaders) light while the upper light of the dual fixture is the steaming or masthead light.

The bow light and the deck light are likely in a combination fixture, mounted on the mast. (When it's on, the bow light can't easily be seen from the boat during the day.)

The bronze Spartan seacock handles can be purchased from Spartan Marine in Maine. Like all boat bronze fixtures, they are pricey.
Your seacock with the handle appears to be a Wilcox Crittenden seacock -- Cape Dory used some of these as well as the Spartans.

This may help in properly identifying your navigation lights questions.
