Cape Dory 28 cockpit coaming cleats question

Post by Pembquist »

Greetings
I'm in the process of buying a 1977 CD 28 and I have noticed that on the cockpit coaming (the wood part port and starboard) that there are holes for hardware but no hardware. I assume the missing hardware is a pair of cleats for jib sheets. Can anybody tell me if these are Spartan Bronze coaming cleats, if they are 6 or 5 inches and if there is a good reason that somebody would remove them?

Thanks

The 5" is a "two holer" and the 6" is a "three holer". If you know how many holes you have you have your answer :D Yes, they are Spartan and who knows what evil lurks in the minds of men.

Am guessing that the jib winches have been replaced with newer self-tailers and the prior owner felt the cleats were no longer necessary.

They were Spartans, and the folks up at Spartan should be able to tell you the size if you want to add them

My 76, CD28 had these 6", 4 hole (1/4") bronze cleats on the cockpit coamings.

I highly suspect they are the "3 hole" model and the "2 hole" model was used on Typhoons.
Self-tailing winches are not a good reason to remove those cleats, IMHO...
On KAYLA I frequently put a sail tie loop on the tiller and trim to the windward cleat for a po'mans autopilot. :D

Thanks for the replies. I found the originals squirreled away on the boat. 3 Holes. The PO must have been planning to sand his coaming as brackets for the dodger were also hidden in a coffee cup.
