Air or wind scoop

I would like to install an "air/wind scoop" for S/V Bali Ha'i. I want to be able to install it on the forward hatch. I have looked at various models. Some (like ATN) are priced way out of my budget. Others look pretty flimsy.

I would like it to be simple, durable and easy to install and remove.

Any suggestions and recommendations will be much appreciated.

I have something similar that I picked up at at the consignment shop. It is made of light weight cloth and it does not seem to be an issue. I only ever fly it when it is hot and the breeze is light. If it is really windy you don't need it as the hatch cover will scoop up enough wind without any help. The scoop makes a huge difference on hot days when the wind just blows through the boat, Steve.

I am leaning towards a wind scoop called "Breeze Booster". I am trying to attach a photo.

I like this one because it can be turned around to any wind angle. While not essential on a mooring, this will be helpful at a dock. I am thinking of relocating S/V Bali Ha'i to a nearby marina/dock facility.

Does anyone have any personal or anecdotal experience with the "Breeze Booster" . The size that will fit my forward hatch is about $70. Expensive Sadly, I am a poor sewer/seamstress. I have holes in my socks from 20 years ago.

For half the price, the "Down the Hatch" option from barfwinkle would be my choice. It too can be adjusted for any wind direction. Its tied to a halyard at the top, and can be pivoted around the hatch hole to catch the wind. It does not have to be facing the bow.

He may be flexible on price given a new one is just shy of $50, and would qualify for free shipping if you bought some random $2 item to get the total over $49.

I have the breeze booster. It works well. My favorite part of the design is how easy it can be pulled inside the hatch without leaving the cabin when it starts raining. In the v-berth I can just reach up, pull it inside and close the hatch without getting out getting up and going above deck. I don't think any one brand is particularly better than the other.

I was thinking that the Breeze Booster would, in addition to directing a cool breeze into the cabin, also act as a rain guard or "umbrella" keeping out light to moderate rain water. Obviously, not a South Florida "puddle pounder" but a light rain.

In your experience does the cloth material act like a rain guard or "umbrella".

No. Rain tends to come in along with the wind. I've never left it up for any appreciable amount of time while it is raining though because I find the hatch is a "better umbrella".
