I bought a zink for my prop shaft but when I looked at my shaft I only have about 3 treads to screw it on. If I take of the second nut for my prop I will have plenty of treads ,but is that a good idea ? This zink has no cotter pin or any way to lock it on is that normal?

on my boat there is a hole through the shaft which takes a cotter pin that first passes though the zinc nut after it has been screwed on to the end of the shaft - the zinc itself is held on to the zinc nut with a screw - i always put some caulking on that screw and so far haven't lost a zinc - i also have room for a shaft zinc just ahead of the prop and i do that every year also

Re: Zink
Ken,
Which model of Cape Dory do you have? Some of the models do not use a perry nut aft of the prop but a zinc collar instead which afixes to the shaft forward of the prop. That's where it is located on our CD32.

Re: Zinc
FWIW my boat is the same, so I use a donut-shaped shaft zinc that screws together around the shaft with allen-head screws. Tighten it firmly, because it can drop off if the screws loosen. This shows up as a sudden change in the vibrations of your diesel.
Assuming mine is still there, I'm always amazed at how eaten-away it is after I haul my boat in the fall.
