documentation of Cape Dory 30

Post by Will Parker »

I just acquired a Cape Dory 30C (Hull # 358) which has never been documented. The Coast Guard requires certain dimensional information which usually is available from the builder, but obviously not in this case. I can supply the "length" and "breadth" dimensions from published data, but I do not have what the Coast Guard describes as "Depth" : ". . . the vertical distance taken at or near midships from a line drawn horizontally through the uppermost edges of the skin . . . at the sides of the hull, . . . to the outboard face of the bottom skin of the hull, excluding the keel. If a vessel is designed for sailing and has the keel faired to the hull, the keel may be included in the depth if the distance to the bottom skin of the hull cannot be reasonably determined. . . ." Has anyone else had the experience of going through an initial documentation of a Cape Dory 30 and if so, do you have the requisite dimensional information, and will you share it with me. Thanks.

I documented LIQUIDITY... the measurement you need is relatively simple. You know the draft. All you need is to add the freeboard, that is, the height of the deck above the waterline, measured midship. That's easy to measure if the boat's not too far away for the winter.

Our '83 CD30 is listed as follows:

Gross: 9

Net: 8

Length: 30.2

Breadth: 8.9

Depth: 6.8

Hull Material: FRP

Self Propelled: Yes

That should give you all that you need.

Hi Will;
Call Robinhood Yachts (see 'where to look' section on this board) and
ask them to fax or send you a copy of the original builder's certificate. You'll need to tell them the model # and hull #. It has all the information you are asking about, and will allow for smooth documentation...
