Winter Storm
For any of you still in the water in the North East, don't forget that this snow storm is expected to bring 50 mph winds and incredibly high tides. Plan your dock lines accordingly!

Re: Winter Storm
And if you are in a mooring field, try and get your neighbors to check their lines. I lost my boat this past autumn when a neighbors boat got loose from its moorings and blew down on my boat during a minor storm. The costs to fix her would have been more than what she was insured for.

Re: Winter Storm
Yes! Best sail of the "season" last Saturday! I begrudgingly winterized the diesel yesterday just in case we have a power outage and my engine compartment heater stops working. I could have set up a generator I suppose but then might not be able to heat my house. My wife and kids seemed to think house heat was more important. Some people have their priorities all wrong!Northstar1014 wrote:Some people still have boats in the water?!?

I recall the incident but was unaware of the book. Looks good. When you're finished please let me know if it is, in fact, well written. Some authors are very talented and others less so. I have a huge number of books. Several I've read over and over and I have a few which would make great Christmas gifts for those of whom I am not fond.Northstar1014 wrote:Some people still have boats in the water?!?

Re: Winter Storm
Well, I guess I'm one of the fortunate few. With this storm expected to zero in on the Washington, DC area, which of course includes Galesville, MD where my boat is, I'd be concerned. However I'm having the yard redo my deck, and my boat is still inside a heated shop!!! With the forecasted winds in the 60 mph range and expected two feet + of snow the marina sent out notices for those with boats still in their slips to check lines, double if necessary, etc, etc, etc.
I'm not gloating, this is a rare instance when I just happen to be in the right place at the right time.

Re: Winter Storm
My boat is still in the water.
At about 30N, 90W (New Orleans)
It's a brisk 43 degrees here with no snow in the forecast.

Re: Winter Storm
Oh to have the problem of checking your boat's lines in January. Meanwhile here in Minnesota, there is only 6 inches of snow on the ground which came in a series of one inch "showers" which is pathetic. We would love a great big dump of the white stuff especially starting on a Friday night and lasting through the weekend. It doesn't get any better then that; hunkering down at home with no place to go watching it snow. We did have 20 below last weekend though so that gave us a good kick. If winter isn't tough up here, you won't appreciate the Spring as much.
Meanwhile.............
Mariah sleeps.
Good luck east coast friends and enjoy what nature sends you.

One Cool Cape Dory
So far, so good in Urbanna VA. Nautica's mast is bobbing around more than usual, but all is well. I can keep an eye on her (boat on the far right) from the warmth of my living room using my webcam (website in my signature below). The wind is expected to get stronger.
You can tell its going to be a high tide by the angle of the gangplank (my secondary tide indicator ). We are about midway through the tide cycle but the gangplank looks like its at high tide. I wonder if it will flow over the seawalll?

We have several web cameras mounted around Flag Harbor and here what it looks like on the docks.
Gabbiano is in the background all wrapped up in her "winter coat".

Re: Winter Storm
I think I have read three of the Tougias books. He seems to have a formula that is similar in all of his books and it works. They are well written and thoroughly researched. He also has a tremendous amount of respect for the men in his stories and especially for the Coast Guard and the role they play in these events.Jim Walsh wrote:I recall the incident but was unaware of the book. I think you will find yourself buying extra copies to give, as presents, to people you do like, Steve.
Re: Winter Storm
Those books look pretty interesting, I'll add them to my collection. I'll probably not read them off soundings
