Question on Builder's Plates
Just received builder plate for my CD 30. Beautiful! I am curious what you other captains are doing with yours. Installing as is and let it turn. Clear coating of some sort? Polishing? Would appreciate your thoughts.

Re: Question on Builder's Plates
Russell,
That plate was made from a mold taken off of the plate from Hanalei. Hope it came out just perfect! When I bought her, the plate had turned. I removed it, stripped it with paint stripper, and then polished it with kitchen copper cleaner. Then I went to Home Depot and purchased a clear coat specifically made for protecting brass. A small spray can, it went on very easy. Had lasted for three years before I stripped it and cleaned it again before I sent it to Roger.
By the way, it is mounted centered on the companion way molding, facing aft, so you see it as you descend the ladder into the cabin. In that location, it isn't exposed to much weathering. FWIW....

Re: Something to think about....
Leo,
I spoke to Roger yesterday "at length" about the plates and casting bronze in general. He is a very knowledgable individual about bronze as I am sure you are aware.
Roger is actually producing two types of castings. The first is a casting, made from a mould, taken off of an original plate. It will have all the imperfections of the original, including the "bumby" background that appeared because the originals were sand castings. The second is a casting made using a photo engraving process. Plates from this process will have perfectly smooth backgrounds. Roger uses an investment casting technique, similiar to how jewelry is made, in fact identical to it. The resulting plates from the photoetch methods will be just like jewelry. Maybe those that have that type will want to preserve them with a clear coat as I described.
Oh, while I have you ear, did you ever find anyone on the web that has a CD-30K plate? Roger said that he will probably be able to modify the CD-30 plate and add a "K". But, I wonder, the CD-30 plate does NOT say CD-30C. Maybe you just need a CD-30 plate.
How's winter treating you? Keep your head down, it sounds like we're going to get hit this weekend!

Re: Something to think about....
If I haven't done it already (my list is at home) I will be happy to provide Roger with artwork for the 30K if it is different from the 30 in nomenclature only. I will be less willing to create something very different, but I might give it a go. I would also like to be able to create artwork for the 10, 14, and any others that used the rectangular etched plate, but I don't have a very good copy on my 14. Does anyone else have a clean copy I can lift artwork from?

The plates for the 30C and 30K are identical
In December, I sent an e-mail to about 22 CD30K owners inquiring about the builder's plates on their boats. Several of their owners got back to me and they indicated that the plates for the CD30C and CD30K are identical.
Here's a graphic representation of the CD30 plate:

Perhaps there are some CD30K owners out there that would be willing to confirm this again, right here on this thread? Let's hear from you CD30K owners. Please?!

Re: I thought so....
Catherine,
Thank you for the comment, I kinda figured that the CD30c and CD-30k plates would be the same. After all, it is the same hull, just different rigs. The plate you displayed is the same as the one from Hanalei, and is the same as the one that is now available for Bristol Bronze(because Roger used the plate off of Hanalei as his master!)
We need to tell Leo next weekend that he can in fact get a builders plate from Roger, unless we hear in the mean-time from another CD-30K owner that the plate is truly different.
See you next Saturday at the NE Fleet meeting....

Hi All, ON my 79 ketch the plate does seem to be identical to the 30 cutter , with no K noted. Jody Kaplan CygnusLeo MacDonald wrote: Russell,
