I am in the process of removing and replacing an old Ideal windlass. It is a thing of beauty above the deck... and a mass of rusted scrap below! Why anyone would think a steel motor and gearbox in a wet, salty anchor locker was a good idea, is beyond me! In any event, I will need to replace the whole business as even the steel shaft that penetrates the deck and turns the bronze capstan is corroded beyond help. For any one interested, you can follow the progress of my CD31, Danusia (formerly, Toccata), on Tim Lackey's website, http://www.lackeysailing.com/projects/danusia/. At least I was smart enough not to try and tackle this project by myself!
Discussion of any experience with another windlass, Ideal or any other brand, would be appreciated. The thought of hauling that 35 lb CQR, plus chain, throughout another season is already making my 65 yr old back complain.

Re: Windlass Replacement
Have you thought of contacting IDEAL Windlass to see if the windlass could be rebuilt? I been to the Ideal Windlass back in 2001 when looking for a windlass. The company has been in business since 1930 or longer, as you say the unit is a workhorse. We have a 35 # CQR with all chain and appreciate not having to haul the beast.
I have no connection with IDEAL WINDLASS just a VERY SATISFIED CUSTOMER.

George, got a call in to Ideal, but haven't heard from them yet. My guess is almost nothing is salvageable, but I'll check with them for sure.
Happy Holidays!

We have Lighthouse 1500 on our other boat and can't say enough good things about it! Pricey, but worth every cent. No affiliation.
