Force 10 cozy cabin diesel model (old)

Post by jen1722terry »

Hey sailors!

We just removed an old Force 10 diesel heater from our 31. Not sure of the age, though probably from the late 1980's. If anyone is interested in it for use or parts, let us know. The heater is presently with us in Nova Scotia, but we can bring it back to New Hampshire (North Conway), if anyone wants it, with the following caveats:

1. We will not ship the old pressure tank. It would be a bit of work to clean it enough and I'd still worry about a problem with the shippers. If you want the pressure tank, we'll bring it back but you would have to pick it up in North Conway;

2. The exhaust stack is long, so we would rather not ship that either;

3. The fuel hose is probably original, so we'll discard that but save the fittings;

4. We'll try to clean out the fuel filter housing but, like the fuel tank, it may not be shipable.

Let us know of any interest. It's free for the shipping costs.

I am interested in the parts and also your thoughts about how well the system works. I have one on my 28 but have not tried it since I've been working issues with my diesel stove burners. I've had issues with clogged jets and wondering how you felt about the heater, especially what you replaced it with and your findings.

Hi Pete,

In response to your question, we have not used the heater. It came with the boat and the PO said he used it on occasion (the boat was berthed near Annapolis). He also included some spare parts which he said were not easy to find.

Not wanting to discard a useful heater, we researched this model very carefully on this forum, Sailnet, Cruisers Forum and other venues and found many comments. Some were not positive, including a few reports of fires and near fires. The lighting procedure is similar to the old pressurized alcohol stoves, which also have a history of fires (our boat had one of these also when we bought it, since replaced by an Origo non-pressurized model).

We are familiar with solid fuel heaters from one I owned in the 1980s. Simple, pretty foolproof and no pressurized flammables. So we have ordered a new one.

As many of you know, our boat spends much of it's time in Nova Scotia, where the springs and falls are a bit cooler than further south. We also plan to go farther north next summer in colder water, so we plan to use the heater a great deal. We don't need 24 hour heat, as we have warm sleeping bags and the Origo stove warms the boat right up in the morning when we cook breakfast.

If you would like the stove and spare parts, let us know and we'll bring it back to New Hampshire in a few weeks and ship it to you. Again, we would rather not ship the fuel tank or vent pipe, but it should be otherwise complete including the heat shield for the cabin wall. We would rather not send individual parts, as someone may want the entire stove and we'd like to keep everything together.

Hope this helps

I would be glad to take the entire unit off your hands if you can bring everything south. I will pay for shipping for the stove and see if I can pick up the rest when I get to the NE. I'm thinking of testing out the system on my 28 and if everything checks out using your unit on our 30.

I had been considering a wood stove.
