Silver Dollar under mast

Silver Dollar under mast
The mast came down on my CD 26 this week and I found a penny on top of a silver dollar that were sitting under the base of the mast. Did these serve as some sort of grounding device? Or maybe there is some superstition that I should know about, or did I just find $1.01 for my bank account. Anyone else know anything about this?
Thanks in advance,

Re: Silver Dollar under mast
This is not a superstition; it is fact. A coin placed on the mast step will bring good luck to the vessel. You would be well advised to return these to their original position.
Re: Silver Dollar under mast
Is the amount of "luck" proportional to the size of the stash you place in the mast step? Why $1.01?? I think I could afford 3 or 4 silver dollars (if they will fit)and perhaps bring fabulous sailing weather to the Northeast this spring and summer. Whatdoya" think?Ed wrote: This is not a superstition; it is fact. A coin placed on the mast step will bring good luck to the vessel. Re: $20.00 GOLD piece....
Warren,
I think this is as important as using "Virign Urine" when one denames a vessel. One would be in harms way if the old superstitions were not adhered to.
I actually believe it was supposed to be twenty dollar gold pieces under the step!!! Could you spare 4 or 5 of 'em for Hanalei???
(One will go under the mast step, and the rest of 'em are going to the BANK!!! I love this bboard........

Re: Silver Dollar under mast
Brian,
I also took the mast down on my 26 this year. The previous owner told me I would find a gold coin under the mast, and I did. He told me his father put it there when the boat was new. He wanted it back and said all would be well if I replaced it. He did say the the custom was that it be gold. I'm not superstisious or anything like that.... but I will be replacing the coin!

Gold is a must!!! With a silver coin and a copper coin and an aluminum mast, you could lose the whole rig to galvonic corrosion in no time.

I'm up to "The Far Side of the World". What an incredible series of novels.

Funny how just a quotation from the series can catch the eye of readers. But then Cape Dory owners have good taste in boats and historical novels.
I've got them all and am on my second reading. They're even better the second time. I recommend the CD "Roast Beef of Old England" which has the sea songs mentioned in the POB series. (www.essaycd.com) You can understand all the words and the songs are great to sing aboard a Cape Dory.

Re: Patrick O'Brien
Imagine my delight to find a few titles (The Yellow Admiral, Nutmeg Of Consolation) on the book table at a local surplus store. Hardcovers, too! So, they're out there.Bob Marsh wrote: I have all of them and have read them 3 times. If I wait a couple of years, I forget.....Conveniently.

When you get to Blue at the Mizzen, you may want to explore some of his other titles, such as The Unknown Shore, the Joseph Banks biography and The Rendezvous and Other Short Stories.
Lastly, James Nelson has a mini-series based in Rhode Island about one Captain Isaac Biddlecomb, as well as The Guardship, the first book of a new series called Brethren of the Coast, which details privateering in the early colonies. O'Brien gives him good marks.
This stuff is addictive, I'm afraid......

addictive is right,
Don't forget the Hornblower series by C.S. Forrester. Also, James Fenimore Cooper has: "Afloat & Ashore", followed by "Miles Walingford", plus the "Sea Lions" is great as well.
So many books...
