About the CD 36/33 holding tank ..
We're replacing the holding tank on our CD 36. Ours is under the V berth. (The newer 36s had them in the bilge.) Supposedly, the old tank was made by Kracor. It is an odd, pyramidal shape. I seem to remember someone posting about this some time ago, though that may have been with regard to the 33, which may have used a different tank. The contact number I have for Kracor has been disconnected. If anyone has any good info on this, please let me know.

Russell:
Last year I needed to replace the holding tank on my 27. It was a v-berth side tank with a tapered shape to fit against the hull liner. I looked and looked and was unable to find a replacement until I opened the Defender catalog which had a SeaLand tank that looked similar. The measurements seemed right so I ordered it. It fit with a minimum of fuss. The SeaLand tanks are expensive but I was very impressed with the thickness of the tank and the general quality. I believe that Yves Feder also ordered one of these for his 27 on my recommendation and had good luck. You can see their tanks on this website:

The one I got is the "c" model. I do not know if there is one that will fit your boat but it's worth a check.

Re: About the CD 36/33 holding tank ..
Russel,
I just replaced the holding tank in my 1979 CD36 and used a Ronco tank. I don't think Kracor is making that tank any longer... if they are it's a special order and will cost you. I can't remember the Ronco model number right off the top of my head, but if you like I'll track it down. There are 2 Ronco tanks that will easily fit in the V-berth space; a 24 gal version and a 30 gal version. I went with the 30 gal. version. It took up most of the space in that small space in the Vberth, but that was fine with me cuz' I didn't really plan on storing much of anything else right next to the holding tank. I ended up glasing in a small shelve and a couple of bulkheads to box in the tank.......you could fit it in without doing that, but I really wanted it to be snug and "captured". If you haven't done any fiberglass work it really is very simple.
I'd be happy to email you pictures if you like and/or try and answere any specific questions you might have.

Russell,
The tank you mention (from what I gather from the CD archives)is the same tank (24 gallon) that was installed in the bow of the CD28, CD30 and CD36 (Kracor model # 2-6256). I have a CD 30 with this tank and would be willing to discuss a tandem order with you. The archives mention that Kracor charges a setup fee to put the molds online since this tank is out of production. Perhaps we could split the setup fee??
Or maybe the Ronco tank that Patrick mentions is a better deal??

I'm interested ..
The number Catherine gives below seems to work. (I get a recording saying they're closed.) Does Kracor have a website that gives their tank specs?
Re: About the CD 36/33 holding tank ..
Pat,
I have a CD30 that has the Kracor bow tank--the archives indicate it's the same one used in the CD36. I would appreciate if you would send the pictures and Ronco model so I can compare with what I have.
Was your old tank a Kracor bow tank? Under my V-berth there is a hull liner with an area molded that is the same shape as the Kracor tank...is yours the same?
What options did Ronco provide for placement of the ports?
Thanks.

That sounds like the same set up as mine
Glen writes: "Under my V-berth there is a hull liner with an area molded that is the same shape as the Kracor tank."
The liner is nice, because it both supports the tank, and likely provides additional stiffness to the hull, where it takes the brunt of pounding. Unfortunately, it sets fairly rigid limits on the shape of the tank that can fit. Removing the liner and glassing in new supports makes the operation larger. I'd be interested in joining others in a group purchase of a the Kracor tank. Assuming, of course, that we all really need the same thing.

Re: I'm interested ..
I haven't been able to find them on the Web. I did a search on "Kracor" on the CD board and found some interesting info...one post mentioned that they had sent him very specific specs on this particular tank. Nobody has posted a remedy to ordering a new Kracor to fit except the one poster that built his own...not for me (at least not this time around)...maybe the pictures that Pat has will provide an alternate replacement. I prefer a drop in solution with no modifications except an additional port for a macerator pump. The reported life span of the Karcor tanks is 10-15 years...good enough for me right now...mine is 17 years old and has only a hairline crack on the pumpout port (I've managed to patch it, but that's only a temporary fix).
The tank cost is reported at $161 and the setup fee is $200...very high if you order only one...maybe we could find a couple more CD28, CD30 and CD36 owners that want to go in...if not, I'm willing to pay ~$260 for a drop in solution.

Kracor Bow Tank Spec Sheet
Russell,
I have a spec sheet for the Kracor Bow Tank used on the Cape Dory 28, 30, 36, and Intrepid 9M, 28, and 35. I got it from John Riester when he was working on his tank last year. I sent to everyone on this posting but you, your e-mail was not attached. Post to my e-mail address and I will send you a copy.
My tank was cracked, so I removed it. It was used for the head sink, not as a holding tank.

Good news, and a little disappointment
Kracor faxed me the drawing for the tank, and it does look like the old one. (I need to verify the measurements at home.) However, Kracor will not customize the fittings. I wanted to make three changes. (1) The inlet port is on the corner. Mechanically, that is a bad place for a port. I had the old revision, where the inlet port was on the opposite corner. My tank had cracked from both of these ports. (2) The ports are on faces. I prefer ports on top. (3) I wanted to add a second outlet port and pickup tube, for an overboard pump. I wonder if it is feasible to get the ports added after the fact?
We can't order through Kracor directly. West Marine is a reseller for them.

Already got it from Kracor. (See below.) Here's my email add

Re: About the CD 36/33 holding tank ..
Does anyone know anything about the availablity of replacements for the CD27 V-berth tank? Ours is patched and holding, but I'd love to have the information at hand.

Re: About the CD 36/33 holding tank ..
Interesting subject. I have talked with someone about adding a fresh water tank on my 25D. Is it possible that Kracor was the OEM for water tanks as well??? Anyone know?
The additinal tank goes under the starb'd sette (sp) and will take a really "odd" shape. Anyway, just curious.
If anyone has info, I would surely appreciate.
