Don't forget your foul weather gear

When doing your hurricane prep, remember to take your oilies and boots ashore with you. If you need to go out, they won't do you any good hanging in a locker.

Good advice. You don't see NOAA forecasts like this very often (for Baltimore Canyon):

SUN NIGHT
E TO NE WINDS 30 TO 40 KT. SEAS 16 TO 29 FT...
BUILDING TO 28 TO 43 FT.

MON
E TO SE WINDS 30 TO 35 KT...INCREASING TO 50 TO 65 KT.
SEAS 37 TO 52 FT.

I was shocked to see those wave heights so I checked out the forecast for Baltimore Canyon to Hatteras Canyon 100-250 NM and found a forecast for 75 kt winds and waves 38-53 feet for Sunday night. And of course they point out "Individual waves may be more than twice the significant wave height." Can you imagine a 106 footer? That's the kind of thing to give sailors nightmares. Now that Joaquin has taken an easterly route, the highest forecast is for 22 foot waves Sunday night and Monday - still nothing to scoff at.
