How to heave to a club footed jib?
Anyone have experience heaving to their cape dory 28's or any boats with a club footed jib? I was going to go out an practice but don't really know where to begin!

To backwind the jib you need to hold the club boom to windward. That's not complicated, you just need to scope out an appropriate attachment point for a preventer.Northoceanbeach wrote:Anyone have experience heaving to their cape dory 28's or any boats with a club footed jib? It is preferable to drop the staysail and "heave to" with just the main and jib, in the usual manner. If you must heave to with the staysail you'll have to secure the end of the boom to one side via a preventer or a bit of shock cord, similar to what I do to get the staysail boom out of my way when using my manual windlass. The foreword lower shrouds are the most handy attachment point.

Jim,
Remember that the 28 has just one headsail. From the factory that was a club footed jib.

Re: How to heave to a club footed jib?
Raven has a club footed staysail and I do tie it to the foreward lower to keep it out of the way when furled. I don't think I would feel good about doing this to heave to but then I always use the jib anyway.
I did put a bail on the end of the staysail boom to use with a preventer. It proved to be useless in that location for that purpose. The angle just isn't right from the end of the boom. I am pretty sure you would run into the same situation with a jib boom. The bail needs to be more towards the center of the boom to be able to cleat it off to hold it to windward. Before adding a bail to use as a preventer or facilitate heaving to, you might use a strap to find the right location. The problem is that the bow gets much narrower and it is hard to get a pull from the end, Steve.

Re: How to heave to a club footed jib?
It's been awhile since I had my 28, but after determining the boom attachment point and the strong point on the deck/rail, how about taking a line with a snap hook to the boom and a snatch block to the strong point and then to the cockpit area. This would make adjustment easy, and when ready to sail the second trip forward would be unnecessary.
